OP I think it's best if you do a full inventory of what's in your home.

or alternatively fit a lock to one of the upstairs rooms, and put everything of yours that's valuable in there......and never let the key out of your sight.

  • Is there any possibility at all that you could persuade her to sit down and talk?
Convince her that you will both be better off if you can agree to sell the house and split 50\50 ......or you can each go ahead and give a big whack of your dosh to a couple of solicitors!

Hi im after some advice please.
My partner and i split up at xmas after 6 yrs together, we have a house together that was bought out right 4 yrs ago after i won a bit of money on the lottery.
The money for the house came out of my bank account but we put the house in both names. All bills come out of my account so i told her i wanted half the cost on the 1st of every month. She is refusing to pay anything but insisting on staying in the house. While i was out at work one night last week she came home and took the new 3d tv and my ipad out of the house and iv not seen them since, she says the tv is hers as she paid for it. She will not speak to me she just says i will be hearing from her solicitor. I need to know if she has any rights staying in the house if she is not contributing to bills. We dont have children to think about but i have 3 dogs and would find it hard to rent anywhere with so many dogs. Im worried that ill come bk from work to either an empty house or the locks changed. She does have another house that her ex husband lives in they get on well so why cant she live there instead. Hope someone has some advice please.

OP is the lady in question your wife or just a long term girlfriend?

You say the house was bought out right after your lottory win....was the house already in both names before that point?

What percentage did you buy with your winnings?

You also say she removed goods from your home. Can you prove who paid for them? And where did she take the goods too?

Sorry for all the questions I;m just trying to get a better understanding of your situation.

You say she has another house which her ex lives in- does she own all of it or does her ex have a share?

Knowing if the two of you are married or not would help.

Even if she won't pay towards the bills - you should keep a record of all expenses incurred while she is living there. This could then be used to offset against the sale of the house (if that is what you choose to do) Realistically speaking she could do this to you if she were to move out and pay rent/bills from another address - I do think you need a solicitor though.
As for things being removed add that to the list too and as another poster has suggested you need to do an inventory of the house contents as well.

This is what I would do, it's a great idea!

You need to start ringing whoever you're paying bills to and telling them you've moved out - you shouldn't still be paying the bills.

Some professional advice would be a good idea - some solicitors will offer a 15/20 min session for free which might be a good idea .....
