Also you look at other peoples trolley-loads and think - mmm walking heart attacks or they are poorer than you or get a grip with that lot or lucky peeps buying beef and pork and ten bottles of wine!!!! You get my drift there.....
Let us know how the challenge goes!!!0 -
As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the thread of cheapest recipes, where others may find it useful:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0

good tips on this thread, its definitely getting harder to keep hold of your cash these days, I've noticed that things are getting more expensive/sizes of products getting smaller.
I second the idea of looking for whoopsies though, I was walking past the co-op this morning and noticed they are closing down for aa refurb tonight so nipped in on the offchance and came out with 4 carrier bags of orange stickered goodies for just over £16! I got...
lots of cheese, st agur, stilton, boursin, garlic roule and goats cheese 15-50p
olives for 20p
sausages 90p (put in freezer),
cooked chicken pieces 30p (freezer for sarnies)
quiches 20p (freezer)
soured and double cream 20p
eggs 60 1/2doz
and 2 big bottles of milk 20p all with dates from today to 18th november! I'm chuffed to bits as this month I have spent up already. Its definitely worth looking for whoopsies.
One other point is to try and bulk buy if budget allows, difficult as you ned the money for up front costs but once you build up a stock it gets easier even though it takes time to get going. I have been taking advantage of cheap bean deals and have a houseful of tnnned beans!
Lastly, keep a price book with the bottom price you can buy food for so if you see a potential bargain you whip it out and see if it cheap enough to fill yer boots!

Wow, lucky you desperate housewife, quite a good haul for that price! I often head down to the smaller supermarkets just before closing time and pick up some bargains. All the bigger ones are open all night so not quite the same price busters. I try and pick up bits and pieces that I can pop in the freezer.0

Chicken was on offer in Tesco the other night so i bought a load, divided up into singe breast portions and froze it. Think I'm starting to get the hang of money saving!!0

I do that too Jessica1984. Great for casseroles and stews to make the chicken go further.0

I like a small amount of turkey breast / thigh pieces cooked with a can of tomatoes, and then 2 or 3 cans of different beans - pimto, butter, haricot, chick peas etc - with a veg stock cube and lots of black pepper, serve it with rice or cous cous and it's lovely and filling, cheap too.
Mr A do a turkey thigh joint for £3 which is reduced to £1.50 if it gets to whoopsie - if I see it I always get and and make stew in the SC and serve it with dumplings and there's plenty of meat on it for 4 - 6 portions depending on how generous you want to be.0 -
I did a lovely root vegetable casserole last night. I added a few slices of chorizo and it really made it extra special adding lots more flavour but for not much more costwise.0
