One pot lentil casserole
2 parts green lentils
1 part rice (brown or white, your preference)
2 carrots - grated
vegetable stock
1 crushed clove of garlic.
Basically bung it all in a pan, simmer with enough stock to cook the rice and not leave loads of liquid at the end, then when it's almost finished season & add some basil.
It's incredibly easy and surprisingly tasty considering there's not much in it!0 -
Hi all,
,<< i have one recipie which is a tomato sauce with lots of veggie that i can batch cook and used for bolognase>>
Please can you post this as I am looking for a good cheap pasta sauce mix. I have had a couple given to me ,but am looking for more
It's just a rough method, i don't weigh or measure anything but i hope it helps,
I used four cans of tomatos the value ones are fine, and whatever med veg you want to use.
I fry an onion, add to that some corguette, mushrooms, peppers and fry it up add the tinned tomatoes and some garlic and some basil, i keep a fresh one on my windows sill and boil it up for about ten to fifteen minutes, it tastes fantastic and you can add a bit of the double concentrate tomato puree if you want a stronger tomato taste, i wizz the sauce up because the kiddies love it, they never ate veg a while back but i made them help me with this so now they know what is in it and eat it happily. I either use it for bolognase with some green lentils to bulk out the meat, or on a jacket potatoe or for just a couscous with tomatoe sauce on top, it is yummy and very good for you, loads of anti oxidants. xxx0 -
Hi everyone, I am currently on WW and have been listing a meal plan of recipes. This is because I need to learn to cook as well as needing to not be tempted by yummy takeaways.
However, although I buy the smallest quantities possible, and Value food as much as possible, I still find my bills quite high.
Does anyone have this problem, or is there any way to help?
Thanks in advanceNSD November 1/20 :money:

There's a fairly recent thread on this with links to lots of others that should help so I'll add your thread to it as it helps to keep all the suggestions together.

Hi everyone
I've just added Pink's great list into the Cooking section of our MEGA Index so that they'll be easier to find again. So you don't have to search around for them - they're in our main index:

Do you have freezer space?? THere are lots of really cheap things that would work on WW (I do SW when I can so I'm not used to counting anything).
Forget about buying small quantities- that is expensive- buy in bulk, cook and freeze- cheaper and more convenient when you can't be fussed to cook anyway!
Got to the market, buy as much cheap veg+fruit as you can. I can get a large trolley full for £10 that will feed 5 of us for most of the week.
You can search for WW no point soup on the web and you will get lots of pointers- basically any free veg can be souped up with, say Thai spices, curry powder or garlic/tomatoes/herbs for italian style soup. THat will give you a really good cheap tummy filler that you can eat pints of- remember that you can eat it chunky or blended depending on how you feel as well!
Other really cheap diet options are pulses/brown rice/brown pasta- all will have points but don't frightened to "spend" some on them as a veg/red lentil dahl with brown roice will be totally yummy and fill you up in a lasting way.
By value potatoes to bake and eat with value beans too- again cheap and very filling.
Sorry I haven't given you any meat options- I'm not veggie but veggie eating definately the cheap way to go (especially if you can get round to soaking/cooking pulses yourself- though tins are cheap too).
FWIW I wouldn't bother with any bread, as I find bread just leads to butter and jam/cheese:rotfl: I have porridge as my brekky- made with water makes it very low cal- again sustaining and tasty and costs pennies.

Gingham_Ribbon wrote: »Ordinary, cheap pasta tastes absolutely fine with just a little garlic and chilli fried in some good olive oil, then grate parmasan cheese over.
You can make this even cheaper, simpler and more authentic by leaving out the chilli and the cheese. It is then called "Aglio e Olio", one of the simplest classic Italian pasta dishes. It uses just 100-125 grams of pasta, 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 clove of garlic per person. Finely chop or crush the garlic and lightly fry it off in the oil. Boil the pasta. Drain the pasta and toss it into the garlic and oil. Season with freshly ground black pepper. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
I, too, use the recipes on this board and only value foods. I, too, find my food bill is very very high. I just spent £33.24 at Morrisons. I didn't add anything very expensive except the alcohol for Sunday's dessert, but that was on this board's list as well. I bought a cheaper bottle than the Bailey's the recipe calls for. But I still find my food bill high. I use meal planners as well, but it doesn't help.Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money but you can't get more time0
