Mobile Phones Direct

Not a saga (yet) but my experience with MPD so far is as follows:

Wed 29 Jan 1030hrs phone to confirm the phone I want is in stock, confirmed. :D

Popped down to T Mobile shop to see if they could match the deal offered by MPD (also on T Mobile) on the HTC One as an upgrade - they failed miserably.

Ordered HTC One on a new contract with T Mobile at 1430hrs. :D

Instant email confirming order and login ID to check the order status - order status was new order - pending. :T

Same day, 1630hrs Pending Network Credit Check. ;)

Thursday 30th 1000hrs order switches to Pending: Awaiting Stock Allocation. :)

Friday 31st 1130hrs Pending: Despatching and Awaiting Connection. Email received stating that the phone has been moved to the warehouse for despatch. :j

Saturday 1 Feb, at 0855hrs I get an email from MPD: Great News your order will be with you today - It's out for delivery. Includes tracking number. :j

Strange - they state clearly that they do not deliver at the weekends, so I check the tracking number with ParcelForce. They state that the package has been placed in a secure locker (in the early hours of Saturday morning). I then phone MPD who confirm that the phone will not be delivered until Monday but could not explain why I had received an email telling me it was being delivered today!

Roll on Monday!

Did you get your phone on the Monday Darth999? I am tempted by an offer they have on an LG G2 but concerned by the negative feedback that people have given across various social media sites etc. Wondering whether to take a chance on this company (accepting that it is unlikely I'd get Quidco cashback of £30 as advertised - but still a good deal without that...)

I'm having cashback problems with MPD - first 3 last year, no problems, then suddenly nothing, despite calls and emails...

I think they all they get bad press. Most people only leave reviews when they are disappointed so it looks worse than it really is. I've used similar sites, not MPD to get phones, and they have similar reviews but no issues from me.

Just go in with low expectations. They're established, they have an address, probably not perfect track record but you're going to get a phone at the end of it. Much safer than these too good to be true deals you find online on fly by nights.

Thanks for the input people, I've decided to go for it (using credit card to purchase just in case) The deal even without cash back is extremely good and even if I have to wait a while to get the phone I'm not in a desperate hurry - will let you know how I get on.

I'm surprised you thought it was best to go into a store to see if they could match the deal. The Retentions teams over the phone are far more likely to have better offers like any other network.

What's interesting is that in previous years that has certainly been the case; the web teams tend to have different things (at least for TMobile) but this year the stores and web teams are offering the same things. I guess that might be due to them trying to move everyone to EE contracts?

Just to update in case anyone else thinking of using this company - the order went in yesterday evening, and when I looked just now the order status was Pending - Awaiting Stock. Gave the company a call - got through straight away to the relevant department, the choice system was very clear and needed only one key press to get through. Chap that answered was very helpful, let me know that they were expecting stock of the phone I chose tomorrow and that, while he obviously couldn't guarantee that they would get the stock delivery, they usually get the phones out for delivery same day.

So far, so good! Will let you know the end of the story in due course
