I'm not confused. Not at all.

I personally do not speed and don't see why people rant and rave about illegal downloads, using an O2 code more than once, whatever the case may be, but speed in their car...

As far as I remember, the temporary speed limits were introduced (along with travelling on the hard shoulder when the M42 was rebuilt) to aid the flow of traffic, not conserve fuel at all. This was only maybe 10 years ago, new vehicles aren't that different today.

The motorway speed limit was initially put in place as a temporary measure to reduce accidents. Some 5 or so years before the fuel crisis.
