Interestingly, the Telegraph reports speed cameras WILL be rolled out to motorways, suggesting the gantry cameras aren't speed cameras.... yet.

I support this.
People say they need to know where speed cameras are. If you're driving at 70 then why do you need to know where they are?
Now just need to put the fee up, add a 0 to the fine and get as much money while people will still break the law in this way.
When If the money stops, then there will be no loss, but a good way to fund something else, quickly.0 -
I think the emphasis of the Telegraph article was misleading about existing cameras. But they did say mainly for variable speed limits.
What the article is really telling us is that there will be additional gantry cameras - the ones already there can and do operate as 70 limit speed cameras. the HA have admitted that.

I am in no way condoning speeding at all - but if the object is save lives and prevent 'crime' then the cameras should be highly visible and not a dull grey colour.
In the old days when Queen Victoria was a little boy we had accounts of policemen with stop watches jumping out from behind hedges.
The AA was founded to combat them.
Camouflaged cameras are a similar sneaky trick.0 -

Someone else who gets confused by inappropriate speed and artificial speed limits that were originally set on motorways to conserve fuel and when vehicles were far less safe.
I can source a supply of red flags and we can cut the unemployment rate in one easy go if you want?0 -
When the managed motorway near me opened, I saw it said 50 so I did 50, and I didn't expect it to change along the way, then I saw 30 just before I hit the road markings, I braked so violently someone could have gone into the back of me.
In fact I've a few times braked for speed camera even though it had turned out I was already doing the speed limit or not fast enough above it to get flashed, I think they're a dangerous distraction. If they really want to make the roads safer bring back hidden cameras, set to much higher threasholds.0 -

Much as I agree with your sentiment, there is a section of this forum dedicated to getting people off when they deliberately (and in some cases repeatedly) commit traffic offences.
Speeding? No, you were the victim.
Parking on a double yellow? You're the victim.
Parking in a shop car park but refusing to shop there! You're the victim.
There are some on here who promote zero responsibility for individuals. The mantra is " it's never your fault". To me that is just plain wrong.1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?0 -
Yes - they dont need road markings - they operate by being activated by piezoelectrics embedded just below the road surface.

I'm not sure which cameras you're referring to but the gantry cameras definitely aren't DS2 as that system does not work on its own, it needs equipment hooked up to it and the road monitored. As far as I'm aware they're only used on single carriageway roads beside a layby where the police car/SCP van can park up and connect to the sensors to get a reading of passing cars.
The motorway gantry cameras (including those on the M1) are HADECS:

They use radar and take a pair of pictures for a secondary check, like Gatsos it's possible to calculate the speed when there aren't lines on the road using photogrammetry so the lines aren't required for type approval. They simply make it easier for an operator to perform the secondary check.

I was travelling down the M1 on Saturday afternoon in the most horrendous rain storm, the gantrys were displaying 50mph and there were lots of flashes from them on the north bound carriageway.
Was that by Hemel was it?
I see these flash like the clappers in the rush hourTB0 -

Most people aren't trying to ignore the speed limits, most people are just trying to do the speed that feels safe and comfortable.

If its a variable speed limit zone then I think these cameras are only activated if you see a new speed limit with a red circle. The cameras then work at the new speed limit. As previously said not all need markings on the ground.
I think we need to grow up and follow our neighbouring countries. Motorway speed needs to be at 80. Cars are much safer, more efficient and now that variable speed limits is the norm it seems silly pottering at 70 2am on a week night.0
