Hi everyone
My question is regarding the m1 (motorway) and the overhead gantry's with speed cameras on them , covering all the lanes at some point of this motorway. These gantry's will also indicate camera sign on them When they are activated will also display a speed on them for you to obey , no problem .Or face the consequences - There's a few of them that yet have no road markings on them , like you would normally see with a speed camera . But will be on , displaying a camera sign and the speed you should be doing . I'm sorry got to ask Can they work ? Without road markings -

Thanks .

I always understood those cameras were to alert the highways agency to slower vehicles so they can display an appropriate speed on the sign.
Not exactly speed cameras to get caught on.
At least I've never heard of anyone having to pay a fine from those cameras.

I drive on the M1 on a regular basis and see them . I just couldn't understand , What they were their for ? Not exactly slowing or having any effect on the traffic ?

AFAIK the cameras on the overhead gantrys are speed cameras.

I was travelling down the M1 on Saturday afternoon in the most horrendous rain storm, the gantrys were displaying 50mph and there were lots of flashes from them on the north bound carriageway.

on behalf of the OP - nobody's answered the question.
Can the M1 speed cameras prove an offence without the crossbar road markings being present?
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Yes! I've seen plenty of people getting flashed by the same cameras bombing it down the M6 in Birmingham
An opinion is just that..... An opinion

I've never had a ticket for bombing through the m6 cameras north of birmingham...

Yes - they dont need road markings - they operate by being activated by piezoelectrics embedded just below the road surface.

Since this is a forum for money saving...
Drive at or below the speed limit and you will use less fuel than when you drive faster, also you will not get a speeding fine.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

However it seems a split conclusion as some people have sped past the cameras and been fine, yet others say they have seen flashes...

    That's the 'Russian Roulette' element.

The cameras might be on for a variable limit displaying 50, 60 or whatever - or on for the national limit even without displaying a 70 sign. Or of course they may be switched off - even if there is a speed displayed.

You can never be sure - but the OP's question was about the road markings like those familiar ones that Gatso cameras need - these gantry cameras don't need those.
