PC unable to connect to network

Wondering whether anyone can help

PC is Sony Vaio, running Windows 7, 64 bit, running IE8 (I think).

I have just re-installed the programme, taking back to factory settings and am unable to re-connect to the internet.

When clicking the wireless icon in bottom task bar, none of the nearby ISPs show, and the 'connections are available' icon in the dialogue box is greyed out.

Usually when connecting to internet, we just type in the router key, but don't have this option.

Any advice much appreciated, thank you.

  • Silly question - is your wireless turned on?

Have you tried a cable connection between the router and the internet port on the side of your computer?

    Thanks for replying.

The wireless at front of PC is turned on.

When plugging into router with ethernet cable, seems to work alright.

Your help is very much appreciated.
  • One other thought, you will need to be physically plugged into the network for this, but have you tried the "update device drivers" option (put it into the search box in the start menu)

Sounds like you might be missing a driver for your wireless.

Please note - I am only guessing here myself, I am working on a Vaio at the moment so having a bit of a look around it.

Sorry haven't been able to get back.

PC currently downloading, installing and configuring 137 Microsoft updates. Unable to update drivers till finished.

    It could take a while!
  • Sony Vaio needs the wifi management software installing before wifi works, I found a couple of times in the past.
Intel wireless/PRO I believe. get it from the sony download website.
ensure you select the right operating system version

Earlier I downloaded some drivers, recommended by enterprise 1701C, but Microsoft cut in wanting to download and install zillions of updates.

When this finished I went to the Sony support centre, typed in the model and have downloaded the drivers recommended for my PC model. When each driver had been downloaded, it showed a file but wasn't sure whether I needed to 'extract', so I left it.

Currently the PC is downloading a further 77 Microsoft updates and I am unable to do any more until this finishes!

Regarding Intel wireless/PRO - I didn't see this when in Sony Support centre, there was a driver for Wireless LAN, which I downloaded, but currently the situation is the same. Can only connect to the net using the ethernet cable. None of the local networks are showing when clicking the icon.

    Not being techy, we're stumped!
