Im sure i posted an essay before but now it seems to have gone. ah well was jsut talking about my issues with this stupid company. uve probably all heard it before. Though they have threatened legal action cos i started using another waste company even though they told me my account had been terminated. so they forcefully made another years contract with me even though i gave them my 3 month early cancellation letter.
so now trading standards will give me a hand. but does someone have the number to the guy from trading standards that has been put on wastetech cases?
    cheers
  • Hi there everyone,

I'm also stuck in a contract with PHS since they took over from our old supplier 3B Waste. When they took over the contract we went about 3 weeks without service for which they charged us and have refused to credit me for. They have also increased our prices from £8 a lift to £18.72 a lift. They are now charging us a monthly rental fee on 2 bins of £12 a month which isn't in my original contract, the WTN of £145.70 (also not in my original contract), and now I get a letter saying they're charging me £25 to fill out a waste declaration form. Furthermore the declaration form says that if I don't segregate my waste (plastic, glass, etc) for recycling they will put my prices up even more. They don't provide a recycling service except for card and prevent me from recycling anything! I am a small business owner at my wits end paying this company up to £1000 a quarter. I tried to cancel the contract and they said I had to wait until August 2009 to get out of it. I spoke to a solicitor and he said they are an extremely libellous company and will chase any outstanding money through the courts if I just cancel my direct debit and the contract on the grounds of them being in breach of the terms.

It was a great comfort knowing I'm not the only one being ripped off here, and I'd like to offer some help to others who may be reading this. There are 2 great companies based in Leeds now offering lifts for general waste at £8 or £9. They will recycle approx 85% of the waste and you don't have to pre sort it. I thought it was too good to be true but have spoken to a really helpful woman called Kate at LSS who explained that they have modified their waste treatment plant to hand sort commercial waste and recycle it (originally they took building site waste and sorted it for recycling). Why don't PHS provide this kind of service? If anyone is near the end of their contracts, I recommend them! The other company I spoke to is Leeds Paper Recycling, although they did seem a bit disorganised, were perfectly nice and slightly cheaper. They operate the same kind of business.

So as for PHS, I'm going to try and negotiate some fairer charges until the end of my contract, then decrease my collections as much as possible with them. I'll also be contacting the OFT and Watchdog to see if they can do anything to publicise the awful way this company is treating is clients.

    Good luck to everyone else!

    Welcome Lou.

One suggestion is to get someone else to start collecting your recyclables, and then reduce your lifts, which I believe someone else found possible, and it brought costs down significantly. Helps if one of those companies you mentioned can do food waste, if you have any, or anything else which might smell if left more than a week ...

We are now well shot of PHS, and all our waste is being collected by a local company who recycle the vast majority of it. It's take a while for them to start collecting food waste, but hopefully from Wednesday ...

  • Guess who sent me a letter today! PHS Wastetech saying how their reputation proceeds them! I might send them a reply saying two words, one being off.

  • Don't forget joining the FSB allows you to get free legal advice and they know all about Wastetech too. I would join you with regards to Watchdog this company is well known as a complete joke! I might get a quote just to see what they say I PM'ed Martin but fair enough he can't start fighting everything! But I notice that still so many companies are using them! I would help fund a campaign to stop them?

Well, see LouOpposite's post above, although she hasn't used the companies she mentions it would be worth talking to them.

Anyone offering collections for recycling has got to be seriously considered, IMO, because landfill collections are going to become increasingly expensive!

  • I too are amoung a few local firms who are getting a very very bad deal out of phs wastetech. i cant believe this sort of behavoir is leagal in this day and age, the way they work would have you arrested in a breath if you where a shop keeper or a market stall worker.
  • I would like Martin to get involved in this one, although he rightfully said he can't get involved in every con this is a masssive company on a big scale. Perhaps he doesn't realise how bad this example is!
I would like to help fund an organised effort to do something about these guys, even just a newsletter, I know a few other locals got in touch with a local paper and get an article written!

  • to save money, reduce your collections to a smaller bin and fortnightly and then start with teamwaste.you will have 2 contracts but will still save money.
