I have to say as well, my parents have been on the other side, as in they were the apparent noisy, anti-social neighbours. They live in a Grade 2 listed terrace in the middle of the city centre. Next door to them is a family of four. The mother must have incredibly acute hearing, she could hear a spider trip up three miles away.

Keep in mind through this post that my parents cannot hear ANYTHING through their wall, and even when they had really incredibly shouty arguments you could only hear them in the garden if they had a window open (which was often, but my parents never made complaints).

The boiler located in the spare room would come on at 6.30, to which there would be a barrage of banging on the wall, shouting to 'shut up.'

My father got harassed because he put the glass in the recycling bin 'in too loud.'

They received a complaint letter from the Council without a single word being spoken to them that their tumble drier was a 'noise nuisance' and to cease and desist using it. Said tumble drier was at the other end of the garden in an outbuilding. Apparently they also 'walked up stairs too loud', said stairs are carpeted and not adjacent to their house.

My father was collared because we visited for six hours one day with our dog and he was told by them that 'he had nothing in his tenancy agreement to allow dogs', which was bizarre as my father had written permission from his landlady.

It all kicked off as she leaned over their back fence and started a torrid of abuse, which ended with, "We have more rights than you because we own our house", which came from their 9 to 10 year old daughter...

They also threatened to kill my parent's cat as it kept 'eyeing' up their rabbit apparently, which is kept in very inappropriate accommodation.

So yes, noisy, anti-social neighbours are the worst, but unfortunately some people are just plain mental and some people get branded as 'bad neighbours' for absolutely nothing.

I would have loved to have stuck my parent's next door neighbours next to ours, then they would really have realised what anti-social neighbours were, rather than just normal living noise in a mid-terrace!

and to give the other side of that ;)

I can hear my neighbours boiler come on at 6.30am, every 3 minutes on then off, and throughout the night in the winter,(I wonder if I'm the complainer ;)) and he lives 2 flats above me, I have told him about it but he says there is nothing he can do about it, which was clearly a lie as there is plenty he could have done, so I either become the moaning neighbour that has "super hearing" or put up with it.
I also can hear the ones above me talk very loudly, listen to the TV turned up very loud , slam the door, as they have a mat that makes the door stick, so instead of changing the mat, they just slam the door, sand the bedroom floor above my bedroom at 6am as "he doesn't sleep very well so likes to keep busy" this on a Sunday and claim it was "only light sanding" have a dog, yet the freehold doesn't allow dogs but as it never makes a noise I do not complain, it does run down the stairs very loudly tho, do I want to be "the one" that always complains? no so I put up with that, yet they invite friends to stay and they bring their dogs which do dark, which is taking the !!!! really, they listen to TV in bed from 10pm-12pm or 1am sometimes, and again in the middle of the night it can come back on and then it's back on at 6.00am, was told "she can't sleep without the TV on" I can't sleep with the flaming thing on, they know I can hear them as they have been told and the previous tenant also told them, but they still do it, they are an old couple so believe they have a right to make noise, and as I do not make any noise at all, they too much believe the sound insulation must be that good between the flats, as they can't hear me, they must be thinking I'm complaining about nothing.

I must say, from your post your parents neighbours could have something to complain about, a drier in the garden would be very noisy, tough if you want to read a book in the garden! and as said a boiler can be very loud as they tend to echo between the walls and the sound that carries can be a lot louder than when the boiler would sound like in the room the boiler is in, as my neighbour allowed me to listen to his and he judged it wasn't that bad, and I agreed but explained the sound I was getting in the bedroom was much much worse, he didn't want to know  I think it was an age thing as they are twice my age.

so sorry but general noise can be just as bad as loud music, when you know the people making it could do something to reduce the problem and do not even accept there is a problem in the first place.
Some people just believe they have a right to make noise, no matter what problems it can cause, of course you have to put up with some noise living so close to other people but you can tell the difference from general living noises and those sounds that are above what someone should have to put up with, complaining about loud walking etc sounds tivvial but if that walking is banging your heal into the ceiling below it becomes a big problem...and yes my upstairs neighbours have a friend that comes and stays which does just that.

My neighbours have always hated me - how can one live in a silent world or even anything near to it.
Music is the greatest invention known to man from 50s jazz to modern rock how possibly can it be enjoyed at low level - I listen to music 90% of my life either asleep or awake (if im asleep and wake up atleast I know im still alive lol).
Movies are surely enhanced if all the effort that the sound men and producers put into it are used to full effect.
At this point all of us that like to enjoy noise for all that it has to offer should apologise and keel over to make way for the timid amongst us(not).
Im lucky Im going deaf for my misabuse and live on an apartment with no neighbours but if ever something happens like a power cut Im left rendered speechless on how generations before me lived - I dont have an answer but consider how we the noisy ones feel.
    Peace (:D)

there is nothing wrong with you loving noisy music/films etc the problem occurs when it is impacting on others when trying to sleep/rest. Why cant you wear earphones, I have never understood why you wish to inflict your wants on someone elses needs.

I moved away from a mid terraced house largely because of noise. The neighbours were a bunch of Nepalese who could hardly speak any English, so any complaints were greeted with a puzzled smile! They weren't bad people but their habits are a little odd, to put it politely. They would gather in the garden every evening and have loud conversations well into the night. They also lilked to invite numerous people and have loud parties on a regular basis. Not loud music, just (very) loud talking.

    Now I'm detached and happy.

We live in a flat, but before we bought it we made sure that noise would not be a problem, we did the same before we bought our last house as well as it was semi-detached.

There is a noise moaner in our block of flats, the flats have fantastic sound proofing, the only sound we have ever heard from our neighbours was when next door did a bit of drilling to put up some shelves.

Anyway, said resident believes no one should be able to start their car in the under ground car park before 8 am, as someone who lives directly over it you cannot hear a thing, moaner lives on the 3rd floor. Apparently the lift also dings too loudly, so I hope said resident always takes the stairs as to not annoy others with such a loud annoying sound.

how do you manage to test for noise before moving?

This is something I would like to do, as I'm looking at a new flat next week.

All of our flats had a noise report carried out when they were built, we also had one of us in the flat and one in the car park starting the car to see if the sound of a car starting could be heard. We also asked next door neighbour to turn the television up loudly to see if we could hear it.

My brother is the same as you and also plays guitar. However he uses headphones for almost all of it, especially in the evening or later in the night. Good quality headphones are very good these days, he swears by them.
    It's someone else's fault.

but general noise can be just as bad as loud music

This is a matter of personal opinion but the noise of day to day living, particularly if one lives in a flat or terraced house, has to be tolerated I think - I am not sure what can be done about the noise a boiler makes when firing or the sound of people talking or moving about a property.

The volume of music/television however is very easily moderated and inflicting such noise on the unfortunate neighbours is highly inconsiderate and unreasonable?
