How much do I need to pay as an apprentice?
Comments
-
Thanks a lot everyone. I'm going to do the apprenticeship anyway, whether it's a low income at the end or not.
I just wanted to know if there'll be much left for me to spend. After 40 hours a week, I probably won't stay motivated for long if I don't get money out of it.
Yes, money ain't the main issue, but it I still do need a tangible reward after all the effort, otherwise, my lack of motivation will be the main issue.
Well you seem to have excellent writing and English skills for a 17 year old so I am sure you will be fine!! Just be very glad you have been offered an apprenticeship because there are hundreds of applicants for every vacancy and many young people never even get a reply or interview.Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy - Anne Frank :A0 -

Well thanks, but I don't think my English wholly defines me as a person lol. Btw, I'm using good English in this forum but usually that's not exactly how my English is displayed. I usually ain't bothered about typing and don't care about grammar or spelling in other sites. Idk why I'm talking professionally here.
Plus, maybe it's because I live in London, near the city as well, but I had been offered a lot of interviews of which I did go to almost all and I've been accepted only into 2 apprenticeships including this one. It seems a lot more easy to get into the apprenticeships that have a low pay. Realistically speaking, £125 isn't at all average in terms of an apprentice's 40-hourly pay, especially in London.0 -

Well I wish I could say it was the same in the 2nd city but it isn't, what is your apprenticeship going to be in may I ask?Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy - Anne Frank :A0 -

- I'm starting apprenticeship in 2 days.
- Currently, my dad works part time and gets £126/week (£6,552/year) and we don't pay anything. No-one else in the family works.
- My apprenticeship will pay me £125/week (£6,500/year),
- That makes the total household income £251/week (£13,052/year)
Question: Will we have to pay anything with that income and how much?
Please state ANYTHING we have to pay and anything that gets reduced, like tax credits, benefits, rent, etc.
How much will I have left at the end?
Also, will I be excluded from free NHS treatment and vice versa.
Please help; I want to decide if I actually want to start the apprentice; whether it'll be worth my time.
Thanks a lot! I'll be so grateful for an informative reply.
Hello,
I did an apprenticeship myself not too long ago
I got paid a few quid under £110 a week so you're on a bit more than me but I can give you a rough idea of what I had to pay although I just gave my parents money and they paid all the things I needed to so not sure what went on "behind the scenes"
I think with my wage, my rent was something like £11 a week so I expect yours would be something like that or similar.
My parents weren't entitled to child benefit for me, I don't think, when I started the apprenticeship as I was classed as earning but I'm a smidge older than you so that could have something to do with it also?
When you say the NHS, I assume you mean prescriptions? I had to pay for mine - it's something like £7.65 per item each time although since you'll be classed as "low income" as an apprentice, if you ask the chemist, they'll give you a form to fill in and send off and you can possibly be entitled to either free prescriptions or reduced price, can't remember which? But it's worth asking - and the sooner the better. Don't leave it until you actually need a prescription otherwise you'll have to pay for the medication and then go about claiming the money back within a certain timescale. If it's just one item, fair enough but if you're like me and get a job lot each time you're at the doctors, it's not that great
Tax credits, I don't have a clue about, I'm afraid.
That's all I can really think of.0 -
Well good luck I'm sure it will stand you in good stead for the future and getting a job. Getting experience is very important.Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy - Anne Frank :A0

I don't agree parents should take all the money and sort it out though once you start work which is in affect what it is. Young people need to learn to manage their own money.
I think a fair amount is 1/3 of income for board and keep. Obviously this will vary according to personal circumstances. If one had to get a room it would be a minimum of £70 a week + food.Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy - Anne Frank :A0 -

Thanks a lot, I do hope I have money left to spend. Let's see what happens. Also, how do I go about doing the chemist thing; how does it work?cattermole wrote: »Well good luck I'm sure it will stand you in good stead for the future and getting a job. Getting experience is very important.
Thanks. It's a shame; I could've done much better with my life. I'm a very good learner and my IQ is pretty high too and I'm social too (so more confident). I was expecting to be a lot more when I was young.0 -

I think a lot of young people are in this situation. Why are you not doing A levels then?Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy - Anne Frank :A0
