Big big hug for you meames. It's a horrible decision to have to make but you love him enough to be able to make it.

Big hugs.Been there lots of times.

Monty was a few weeks short of 14 when we let him go. He had a bad heart with which he was coping well on meds, but he was very thin and he became so weak that the smaller dogs could knock him over.

One day, he refused to eat, the vet's vitamin jab not helping, so the kindest thing was to let him go with dignity.

That last night, when the decision is made, is probably one of the hardest, but we have to hold together for their sake.

Just a quick update. I put down old towels and quilt covers to stop him slipping. Not all were competely successful. I have been in the lift and found some old carpet anda rug that manages to cover most of the laminate and I have bought a remnant from carpet right for the kitchen. This is a bit better but he is struggling to get up, although he seems really restless. He whines for me to stand him up. I have 'slept' by his bed the past two nights and will do again tonight.

Work have been great and let me go home early the past two days but their patience will run out soon. I work an hours drive away.

He hasn't eaten since Monday morning. Today was the first say he had Some water and a tiny bit of milk, but is refusing all other food, even ham, sardines, cheese and even just to tempt him a chip.

I am going back to the vet tomorrow late afternoon.

My heart truly goes out to you & I fully understand your awful dilemma. We had to make that much dreaded decision just before Christmas. My old boy had been suffering with cancer for over 2 years and had done amazingly well & had great quality of life but over the last couple of months our walks had become shorter & shorter. I too use to carry him up & down the stairs. He took a drastic turn for the worst over the weekend and we just knew we couldn't let him suffer. He was the love of my life & my shadow but he'd just had enough and we had to do the best thing for our boy. It's the hardest decision in the world to make but we have to think of our beloved pets and not ourselves. Sending you big hugs. Be brave for your boy.xxx

My heart goes out to you.

We were in the same situation with our last dog, Whisky, he was a Springer Spaniel, and was the most amazing, wonderful, loving dog, he was 7 yrs old when I had my daughter, and I dreaded how things would be, he loved from the day I brought her home they were inseperable.

We were living on borrowed time, and when he was 13 we knew every day was a day borrowed, we had taken him on holiday in the May, and he struggled, and about a week later his back end had gone, he no life in his eyes. it was the hardest day, my parents had their 1st dog before I was born, over 40 years we have had to make the decision, it doesn't get easier.

We rang the vets and they were lovely, they said bring him straight down, we were taken straight in, I didn't stay but went to say goodbye to him, and they took us through the staff entrance so we wouldn't have to see anyone, we had him cremated, with the view to scattering his ashes at his favourite places, but when we went to collect him the vets had arranged for the ashes to be returned in an urn (was meant to been a box) that was a gift from them.

Ring the Vets, and there be able to make all the arrangments so it be peaceful and comforting as it can be.

Please take care, and big hugs xxxxx

Owning and loving any animal(or any other creature be it bird, reptile, fish etc) comes with an unwritten rule.

If we love them as much as we say we do(and sadly, many don't ) it is better that we suffer because we have to make that last heartbreaking decision ,than they suffer because we can't or won't.

A friend years ago had been through a messy divorce and had only his cat for company. It got a cancerous growth when it got older and though it was ok for a while in the end you could clearly see it was suffering. It lost weight and energy. He just couldn't bring himself to accept that it was his decision alone to save that poor cat from any more, but in the end when it collapsed and was struggling to breathe then he had to do something. His last memories of his beloved cat were therefore traumatic ones and he has stated ever since that he lives with the regret of waiting too long.

Everyone that has to make the decision suffers,of course they do ,but looking back with pride that you saved your loved pet from suffering is better than terrible regret.

We will all be thinking of you today.
