Slip roads onto dual carriageways.....

Sorry, shouldn't be on the road. It's a slip road, not a give way, you're not meant to stop, and on Strider's evidence, she had no need to. I'm not defending Strider, but why do people suddenly think it's OK to stop on a slip road?!
But we have absolutely no knowledge of why she did stop (or whether she was actually just moving very slowly), and Strider hardly makes a good witness, given his failure to understand the situation or observe a stationary car in the roadway.
It may be unlikely, but she may have had an engine fault that cut in for the very first time, or she may have braked hard to avoid an alligator.... Who knows? Given that the OP failed to see her car, it's quite possible she was avoiding an articulated lorry on the main road.
All we appear to know is that the OP nearly rear-ended a stationary object in the roadway through poor observational skills and poor driving.0 -
As I've said, Strider has fault for not looking where he's going, but the woman stopped in the slip road (for no reason) takes most of the blame.
Actually strider said there was one car coming - so it's likely the car in front didn't judge the distance away safe to join a lane in front of a fast moving vehicle!0 -
There is this big see through thing called a windscreen, you look through it, and if there is a stationary object in front of you, you stop or avoid it. It isn't difficult, and anyone who doesn't understand that should have their licence removed.
As should anybody who thinks there a law that compells a driver to pull onto a motorway or dual carriageway, if that action would result in collision.0 -
Daffy Duck - We can only go by what Strider said - of course if she's broken down there's not much that can be done, but then Strider would also have no reason to have complained in the first place. But we have absolutely no knowledge of why she did stop (or whether she was actually just moving very slowly), and Strider hardly makes a good witness, given his failure to understand the situation or observe a stationary car in the roadway.

Nodding Donkey - yes, sorry, poor choice of words. You should give way to traffic on the motorway, but NOT STOP. Whereas at a junction, a give way means stop if necessary.0 -

It is OK to stop on a slip road if you misjudge merging and it would be unsafe to proceed to merge. It's not ideal I agree but neither is having a crash.
Close to where I live there is a very short slip road onto a major motorway and it can be a !!!!! to merge at times...you slow...the guy on the motorway slows, you speed up the guy on the motorway does too and you are rapidly running out of road!0 -

The lorry driver may have been beeping to Thank you. Reading your description, it sounds to me that you were trying to be considerate:)Mr lorry had slowed to a crawl very quickly indeed, hit the breaks and got the distance between us back, luckily the 1st lane was still clear so I joined with out issue, let the lorry pull out in front of me, then when I had the opportunity I joined the 2nd lane to overtake said lorry..... Then he beeped me ?
I have had similar, lorries being bigger than me I tend to be careful and give them wide berth, or stay back until they have maneuvered . And have had similar thanks in passing when safe to do so. Some people especially lorry drivers do use a little toot on the horn or flash of lights as acknowledgement.
(Putting aside the legalities of flashing lights or tooting horns:D)0 -

Should have eased off on the approach to the bend. He came out of the bend too fast and nearly crashed again. Funny how it always happens to poor drivers like him.0 -

20mph on a 60 road is too fast?
Came out of the bend too fast? I came out of the bend at less than 5mph because there was some pillock parked on the apex.
If your going to troll me, at least do it properly.......“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
