I think that the meaning of "clear" is obvious - not impeding another road user's progress.;)

My point though should also be obvious -- because the road cannot be guaranteed to be clear by any definition, the person joining the motorway should not be relying on people getting out of the way, and therefore the suggestion that people who don't get out of the way are 'selfish' is moot.

There do seem to be a hell of a lot of people who assume that people will get out if their way and that they don't have to match speeds or if necessary, stop. I move over, as a courtesy, if it is safe for me to do so. I suspect there are some who won't move even if they could who might appear selfish and there are probably some who aren't even aware there is a sliproad.

In the original case; I suspect a bit of bad road design (which is not that uncommon) and Strider assuming that just because he can judge the approach and match speeds well then everyone else should do too.
I need to think of something new here...
  • We have a busy major 2 lane trunk A road near here where the slip road joins on the apex of a right hand bend to the main road. Both roads are designated 50 and are on quite a steep downhill drag. If you are entering from the slip road due to the right hand bend the main road traffic is not in the drivers door mirror or the rear view mirror. You therefore have to make your approach looking over your right shoulder, continually flicking your eyes to the front making sure the car in front is not going to suddenly anchor up.
Just to make life more interesting I have several times had a car in the right hand lane of the A road suddenly switch to the left hand lane at the exact point I make my entry.

A close relative did that years ago, when my family was in the car. This was before I had passed my car test (I had a full bike licence), and I gave him a right earful.
Unfortunately, my dad and sis both took his side:(

Bonkers! The one I saw was on a busy stretch of the M6 as well. Not only that, but at most motorway exits you can just go up to the roundabout and go straight over it to come straight down the joining slip road and carry on!

The Highway code says this: give priority to traffic already on the motorway.

Unhelpfully, it doesn't say "stop if absolutely necessary".

This topic is quite popular across the web, with there being some debate as to the correct answer.

There is a slip road near me on the A38 (not sure how you post links to street view) between alfreton and mansfield south bound, I'm guessing its about 30 metres long, around a tight bend. If there is heavy but flowing traffic, you just have to gun it, in my wifes car this isn't a problem, in mine you need to thrash it to get up to speed with the traffic. If some !!!!!! decided to be stationary at the end of the slip road, you're pretty much !!!!!!ed too.

The junction I'm reminded of is where the A66 joins the A19 northwards in the Middlesbrough area. Very short sliproad and terrible visibility joining the fast dual carriageway.

Even I have been forced to almost stop there a few times, and it's not the sort of road that's particularly safe to join from a standing start.

Incidentally I have had someone stop in front of me on a sliproad joining the A1, in the dark and just after the road swings to the left, so an incomplete view of what's approaching.

I took the slip road. Better stopped by the police than crushed by an HGV. And I'd do it again.

This thread is brilliant! Not only did op through sheer carelessness nearly crash in to a car, she said pats herself on the back for not then showing agression towards said motorist.
Then the icing on the cake - op wonders why the said motorist is mad.

    Just brilliant

Sometimes you have no choice but to stop even if it is not best practice and I would not be happy if some speed demon ploughed into the back of me.

One of the worst bits of driving I ever saw was about 2 years ago - massive roundabout in Plymouth and I was waiting at red lights when I saw a car going backwards round the roundabout as the driver had missed his exit. This was at night and so there was not much other traffic but even so, madness.

I'm 99.99% certain that Strider is male.
