Wandered into J@ck Fultons this evening - got three blocks of paneer for £1 :j just made half a block into a curry that'll last two meals so quite a bargain. No idea how long it keeps - can you freeze it??
YES! It changes consistency slightly - but honestly, for our level of cooking, it's perfectly fine. I've bought blocks of it from h3r0n for 69p and frozen and then used in the next 3-6 months or so. We're not dead yet.......Cheery_Daff wrote: »Also got some coconut milk - now Greying you may know the answer, but what on earth has happened to blocks of creamed coconut?? Always used to have one in the cupboard for curries, and they were dead cheap, but I havent seen one for sale anywhere for months, if not years! Only coconut oil and tins of milk now. What's going on??
The one place I consistently get ktc creamed coconut is, of all places, mrS - 89p a block in their ethnic foods division. And if I can get it in Greying Tarn, and the next market tarn across, then I think you should get it locally to you
So glad that mucho, mucho fun was had with Pipster and all were led astray - Bravo! :T:rotfl:

You've had a wonderful few days then, Cheery :j:j:j
The Pipster ... a good mortgage app .... lots of savings ... still celebrating with Mr Cheery ... life is good2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Life is indeed good KC :j :j
And Greying - THANK YOU - bizarrely enough, we went into a small T3sco today and there, right at eye level just past the milk, was a whole box of creamed coconut :j :j I swear I haven't seen any in any of our regular haunts for MONTHSI can only assume you had a word with the universe and plonked it down in front of me
Very happy Cheery today :j :j (doesn't take much... :rotfl: )
Just finishing off the last of the panneer curry with some of my home made soda bread from yesterdayMost jolly, and nice and cheap :money: Curry is just onion, frozen spinach, pasatta, a bit of panneer, and a load of frozen peas, oh and a few mushrooms, oh and a bit of coconut milk which I only had as an experiment and won't bother with again - much prefer to have a block of creamed coconut milk in the cupboard :j
Need to work out what to do with the rest of the tin of coconut milk now :rotfl: That's tonight's job
Handed our furry cheese-stealing dog over to someone else for the weekend (we've got him back on Monday for a couple of days). Goodness, I don't know how people with dependants of the furry or non-furry type manage! We're exhausted :rotfl: :rotfl: Been across town for tea and a toasted teacake (and a read of some fancy magazines in the cafe), and then a bit of a wander round the charity shops.
Spent £6.45 in the cafe between us, and I bought a book for work for £1. Mr Cheery bought a pair of boots and a long black cloak :rotfl: :rotfl:
An afternoon of loafing is in order hereBit of blog writing, bit of reading, and Mr Cheery is out tonight so I might just settle down with a film and my knitting

Oooh TDQ, nice to see you - especially with a suggestion for coconut rice pudding, what a treat! :j :j :j Yes indeed, that sounds exactly like what I should do - I LOVE rice pudding :j :j
Right - I have probably 3 or 4 hours to myself now, so time for a wee list :j
HOUSE
* clear up kitchen
* hang washing up
* make list of final DIY/pottering for tomorrow
OTHER
* kettlebells video
* cheery evening walk?
* blog post
* YNAB (should be quick)
* Think about food for next week at work - batch cook? Shopping list?
* collapse on sofa with a film and my knitting:rotfl:
Hands up who wants to guess which of all those is the most likely to actually happen:rotfl:

Ooh pippi, you snuck in there while I was waffling on :j SO lovely to see you yesterday :kisses3: What is this powdered coconut of which you speak? Is it the same as dessicated? Or is it some other wonder product??
Well I managed to get out for a nice long walk and picked some more blackberries :j I think these are destined for the freezer (and then later maybe a crumble) as we have plenty of jam right now.
Also tidied kitchen and hung the washing up too, and then collapsed on the sofa (without knitting) :rotfl:
Mr Cheery back earlier than expected so we've had a thrilling time investigating removal van options :rotfl: Had one quote from a removals firm for £520, but we've got a friend of a friend who is a "man with a van" who will do it for £200 :money:
Think we may hire a transit for the day too (got a quote for £30 but have to investigate as that seems very cheap...). Not entirely conviced all our worldly possessions will fit in a luton van :$ and don't want to wait til moving day to find out! :eek: But I think between a luton, a transit and our Kangoo we should be ok :rotfl: :rotfl:
Not made a plan for tomorrow yet... but basically it's mostly just touching up paint so I might just get up and crack on and it'll only take an hour and then we can just play for the rest of the day :j0 -

Cheery - I know I'm not Pippi - but I have used the Magg1 (brand) powdered coconut. It is very useful. It's a little like a cross between icing sugar and cornmeal. It's not as sweet (nor as 'big' pieces) as dessicated. There was a time when you could get it as cheap as chips from Appr0ved fuds - like 3 big boxes for a quid. h0me bargins occasionally had it too - and I agree with Pippi. it is super for shoving a spoonful or 3 into a curry, cake or whatever coconutty thing you are making - including rice puddingIt hasn't been on my radar for a while since I stopped using AF (too expensive with postage these days!) and I've not seen it in HB for a while, although I know that occasionally it does appear in HB branches (just not ours
). mrS and MrT etc stock it regularly, see here for what the pack looks like.

Ooh, excellent information, thank you lovely Greying :j :j I shall keep an eye out
And thank you TDQ for the rice pudding suggestionI have just knocked some up in the microwave and it is indeed most tasty :j :j Got plenty for work tomorrow (to which I have added some home grown raspberries donated by a friend which have been residing in the freezer) and I just had a little bowl now too
Today I am very thankful for free fruit and vegetable bounty, foraged and donated by friends :j :j I went blackberrying again last night and ended up with a large bowlful :j Yesterday some friends gave Mr Cheery some excellent dark purple beans, and today we popped into a friend's house for a cuppa and he let us raid his plum tree! We are indeed most fortunate :j :j
I'm currently making this roasted plum and blackberry jam, and can confirm that roasted plums are THE best food, and I *may* have sneaked a small portion into my rice pudding:rotfl:
That has used up all the blackberries, but barely made a dent in the plums, so tomorrow evening I'll be making this plum and ginger jam :j :j
Also, thanks to a recommendation on (I think) KC's thread, I am reading through the archives of the ournewlifeinthecountry.blogspot.co.uk Most jolly and I am getting very excited for my own new life in the country :j although I won't be keeping pigs, or in fact doing many of the things that Sue does, as I shall also be holding down a full time job, only part of which can be done from home...
But one day.. :rotfl: and at least we'll be starting our new lives with plenty of jam :rotfl: (if it lasts that long, of course)
