  • It's a state of mind and down to how fit and able a person is - my nan was in her 80s and had an injury that meant the doctors wanted her to wear compression tights to help her heal and prevent DVT. She refused because 'only old people wear those'. She didn't consider herself old or elderly.

On the flip side, my ex's mum was in her early sixties, had various health problems for a long time and generally a negative outlook on life. She seemed 'elderly'.

I hope somebody was able to talk some sense into her! People of all ages wear those, if they are at risk or if they have things like lymphoedema or varicose veins. A blood clot doesn't care about your vanity!

We all tried but she simply would not have it! Thankfully she didn't have any major issues as a result (although it took her longer to heal from the injury than it should have).

    That's exactly what I think.

    Elderly is currently 73

But there are people of that age who are still physically fit and young in mind too - I hope I remain fit and alert.

My mother in law is 72 this year, still works full time and is a tiny, fit, yoga mad lady who goes swimming in the ocean every morning ( weather permitting ) and always looks fab. She doesn't dress her age but doesn't look mutton either. There's no way I could class her as elderly.

My Grandmother is 94 soon and likes to look after the "oldies" in her residential home.

My old Nan lived into her 90s and never once did I consider her really elderly.

She was as fit as a fiddle, had a daily Guinness or two, smothered all her food in butter and actually worked till she was 90.

She lived on the top floor of a 3 high block of flats - with no lift - and took it on herself to be the cleaner of the stairs.

She was always laughing and telling rude jokes and I loved her so much. She was my inspiration.

It depends on who you ask. Someone in their mid-teens may consider someone over 30 to be old. While a 50 year old would consider that same person as a kid. It's all relative. I've known people who were old in their 40s and people who were still young in their 80s-90s. While the body has a lot to do with it, mental attitude is also a major factor.

I am not afraid of growing old. Having lost people I love to horrible diseases when they were way too young to die, I view reaching a ripe old age as a privilege and not something to be taken for granted. All I can do is maintain good bodily health, and strive to keep my brain active and healthy whilst enjoying a full and enjoyable life.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

My Mum wasn't elderly till she gave up work as a care assistant and stopped driving at 75 because she was getting too frail to do it. She's 80 this year and definitely elderly now, although the politics of the day centre gives her something regular to moan about.

In my mind it's when you reach an age at which you become less able, I don't think one age can make you it, the same way I don't think being 18 marks being an adult.
