I would argue that many shops/bars/restaurants will skip past the amount confirmation screen so that you are just prompted to enter your pin. I've had this abroad, where the restaurant have selected the "bill in £s" option on my behalf, securing themselves a cut of the extra commission, which I wouldn't have paid had I selected €s.

I ordered a takeaway some years ago. Total came to £24 (bargain!) but the restaurant mistyped it as £9924. It was a cardholder not present as I ordered by phone, was double my credit limit yet the bank still authorised it. Fortunately restaurant realised and put through a refund immediately but it then took a few days to credit back my account.

When I contacted the bank to get them to refund my overlimit charges they couldn't understand why I was questioning the way they accepted a not present transaction for such an amount that was both over my entire credit limit, out of normal spending pattern and not authorised by PIN.

All the suggestions so far as very good. The onus really is on you to prove it was a mistake as the receipt would have been really handy to check - sure you can't check your bins to find it?
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • Reminds me of the time I used a PO counter to withdraw £100 from a current account (no cash machine near by). The cashier typed £10,000 into the computer. Transaction was declined due to lack of funds. If I did have £10K in the account I could have been down £9,900!

Whilst I've had the later, I've never had the former as I've always had to enter my PIN to proceed past the amount confirmation screen.

Did the takeaway refund the bank charges you incurred?

The petrol station will know that they've done something wrong because the tills will record how much fuel has been charged for and they will know how much fuel they have in stock.

They can simply check one against the other and see the discrepancy, you just need to contact them and discuss it.

Depends how dodgy the garage is and if they think they can get away with it. Most if not all Jet garages are just franchises or branding.

There is a Jet garage near me with pumps and EPOS that wouldn't look out of place in the 1980's.

In the country side about 30 minutes from where I live there is a jet (Think its Jet) petrol station that still has an old swipe and sign machine rather than chip and pin. If your not from the village you need to show ID to pay by credit card (They also write your number plate on the back of the merchant receipt). Or at least I have to when I pay with my Amex.
