in Credit cards
Hi there,
I recently put £10.20 of fuel into my car from a jet station, I didnt fill up as I had a discount voucher for a supermarket and only needed enough to get me about until I was passing it.
When I checked my credit card statement a week after I realised that the petrol station had taken £102.00.
I phoned Santander to investigate but they say that they cannot do anything about it, I am very unhappy about this outcome as I feel that the cashier has probably scammed me or made an error.
The facts are that I have lost the receipt, the maximum fuel I can put into my car (1.2) is 45 litres, which is only about £55 to fill, and there is no way I could spend more than that in a small petrol station, I have a statement showing I filled up at another station 2 days later (I am 65 and rarely drive anywhere).
Any help is appreciated on how I can go about getting my refund.

It sounds like the cashier typed in the wrong amount (added an extra zero) and as you would have entered your PIN in for this amount the bank probably can't do anything. I'd suggest going back to the petrol station.0 -

You would have been asked to check the amount on the screen to confirm it was correct and then to enter your PIN. You entered your PIN, so you confirmed it was the correct amount.
Your bank are therefore unlikely to help as you approved the payment.
The station may look into the case if you have your receipt showing £10.20 and credit card statement showing £102.00. Otherwise, if you are patient, chances are that they'll notice the error when they balance the till and can then refund you.0 -
No receipt but you do have the transaction by card so there must be a record of the time. If you go to the garage, the manager might still have the CCTV. If it confirms you added petrol to a small car for a brief period at that time they might realise a mistake has been made.
Either way best to go and see them asap.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
Shows the importance of checkinh receipts, onscreen amounts etc before leaving. To be honest though if you have a small car which coild no way take that amount of fuel i would suggest going to the petrol station and pointing that out and they would probably do a check of the accounts for you.0

I almost had something similar in a club a few years ago. Drinks came to £27 (I know, not very moneysaving), they put an extra 0 on it and handed me the chip/pin thing to pay. Fortunately I checked it and corrected them, but I wondered cynically if it's something they choose to do in an environment like that which is dark and full of drunk people.0

If you don't get satisfaction from the petrol station, it might be worth contacting your local paper. Sometimes, with poor publicity like this, it can give the manager of the station a nudge to do something positive. And local papers like a 'cause' to get behind sometimes too.
Makes you aware though that you should check the amount on the chip and pin device. Makes me realise I don't always check it properly either.0 -

The issue was caused by the OP approving the cost, albeit in error. If it is not possible to prove that the actual cost was one tenth then why should the garage receive unfair publicity for what seems like an honest mistake?0 -

Because it's obviously an error if the car isn't capable of taking that quantity or value of fuel.
I'd try and settle with them reasonably but might well consider the publicity route if they dug their heels in.0 -
Let's give the garage a chance to correct its error before advice of going to the press etc is banded around.0

You can prove the car owned by the OP isn't capable of taking that quantity of fuel, but you can't prove which car the OP drove to the station without CCTV evidence, which you can't get as there's no fraud.
Secondly, considering the amount on the CC statement is simply the total amount charged, then the station could argue that the OP filled up several vehicles, or that only a part of the cost was fuel.
This is why the receipt is the best thing to have and should always be kept until the CC statement has been reconciled.0
