I did it once when on holiday, and the hassle was calling the coach and waiting for it to come to the pick-up point (which was rather grotty and a stark contrast having just got back from a nice holiday).

Subsequently I decided it was better to drive there and park in the long-term.

I hedged my bets on allowing two hours travelling time (100 miles) to arrive at Gatwick in plenty of time to check-in two hours prior to 7:30am flight, and it worked out perfectly, we arrived at 5am, and on a Monday morning! :D

Me & DD are flying from Heathrow at 11.45 on a Saturday morning in March & will leave home by 8am, aiming for a 9am arrival, that leaves us some leeway but DH is driving us & he knows all the back routes should there be a problem. I'd love to go down the night before but have an appt with the hairdresser that won't finish until about 10pm.

We've never booked to stay anywhere on arriving back from a holiday, DH is brilliant & doesn't drink alcohol on the flight so he is able to drive us home.

Another vote here for Premier Inn North Terminal. We stayed there last summer. Family room for 4 with 15 days car parking £109. It was a great start to the holiday getting there the evening before. The parking couldnt have been more convenient, we were also able to check our luggage in with BA after we had parked the car. It made the start of the holiday so stress free, the parking is just across the road from the hotel. There room was good, we woke the next morning just having to stroll across to the airport with hand luggage and get our flight. I would do this now everytime I have an early flight from gatwick.

Might be worthwhile to check minicab prices - could be cheaper than the cost of fuel to drive there and back, plus the hotel cost.
