I agree that staying in a hotel the night before is such a nice start to the holiday, so much less stress.

If you're flying with Virgin you can check in the night before as well, twilight check-in until 9pm. It's a wonderful option which we always use.

We always stay at the Hilton connected to the south terminal...not the most MSE option but it's worth it to us for the convenience of just walking to security in the morning.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Premier inn north terminal from £49 per night. Book parking separate and look for a code via holiday extras for on airport parking. Costs a bug more but you get your car on arrival and on your way.
  • wow thanks for replies guys

The Premier Inn North Terminal is particularly convenient as it is so close. Can't comment on the parking aspect as I had no car but did see that they offered it.

If you book the parking through Premier Inn then you drop your car off at the Valet Parking next door to the hotel and it is ready for you to pick at arrivals on your return. It may be cheaper to book the parking separately with one of the off-site providers (Air Parks is good) but you need to balance cost with convenience and the additional time needed for transfers to/from the car park.

we have stayed in the holiday inn with parking, it was very reasonable but do add on the cost of getting to and from the airport, they have a shuttle that does cost and if there are 4 of you, its cheaper to get a cab (something like £15)

I used the holidayextras site on the main bit of the forum as well and it came up with the crowne plaza and secure parking for the two of us that was only slightly more than the parking on its own. Have a look on there if you haven't already. There was cheaper but I decided to go for a chain rather than something I'd not heard of.
I'm a couple of hours drive and wouldn't normally bother but it's an early start and for the extra £20 I've decided it's well worth it to save the hassle. No breakfast, but I can take something along and make a cuppa in the room so that's not a problem.
(Forgot to use quidco though - failed in my MSE credentials after all.)
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

If you have a really early flight then you often have to leave the hotel before they start serving breakfast anyway so not having it included in the rate isn't a problem. Plenty of places at the airport to grab something to eat.
  • Have a look on Holiday Extras. Package them both together and then seperately as sometimes it can be cheaper to do seperately. Do you know anyone who works for the NHS, they do great discounts for NHS employees.

If you've got a generous budget, I'd recommend the Sofitel. By far the best Gatwick hotel and directly connected to the North Terminal with the shuttle to the South right next to it.

In regards to parking. Last year it worked out cheaper for us to park at Long Stay and get the hotel seperately, whereas the year before the package was cheaper.

I have booked the Sofitel. By no means the cheapest. One night B&B plus 15 nights parking was listed at £193 but by the time I had looked at a few sites was down to £133 so very definitely worth shopping around. There seems to be a standard list which holiday operators like Thomson use which is at the most expensive end despite them suggesting it is a special bargain.
