    Heather, that made me :rotfl:

And you've got a chick! Woohoo!

It is so cute! A teensy weensy little chicky, not quite the size of a blue tit. It has dark feathering so looks like it will take after Dad Henry.

Mum is being very protective and the weather here is so very bad that I brought them indoors in a box to help keep them dry and warm. But it has been too dark all day to get a photo without a flash and I don't want to use a flash on such a young chick

Here is a not very good pic of mum and dad

    He's a handsome fella!
Don't blame you for bringing mum and chick in. What's happened with the other eggs?
  • Here is the little one!

2 of the 4 eggs were not fertile and the fourth is still with her. I'm pretty sure there is a developed chick but she doesn't seem too interested in carrying on incubating it. I'll leave it with her until tomorrow to see what happens.

Mum just had a tantrum because she is hungry and didn't think much of the chick crumb I had put in the box. She is happier now with a few mealworms. What do you feed your hens with chicks Giger?

So cute! Fingers crossed for the other egg.

Our mums just eat the chick crumbs (and now growers pellets).
  • I'm on a roll, more not very good pics.

This is a video that my very talented neighbour made in June 2009 a day after My chooks arrived and he caught on camera the very first egg laid in my garden. It seems like 10 years ago . I can' t believe how good the weather was and how different the garden was then. Wow what fun i had with them and how sorry they are no more!

Nykied, are you sitting down? there is something really important we have to tell you.

There is this condition that hens infect their humans with, it is called i-want-more-chickens-itis. Sadly, it seems to affect us all, and there is no cure. Once you have it you are pretty much done for. :o

As you don't have your hens yet your mind is still functioning logically, but, trust us, once your girls arrive they will fascinate and enthral you, and you won't stop at 3. Just look at us, this time last year I got my first 3. I now have errrrm, [STRIKE]5[/STRIKE], [STRIKE]6[/STRIKE], [STRIKE]7[/STRIKE] 8 (chick hatched this morning) and am on my 3rd hen house and run upgrade. Giger and her OH are chronic sufferers, and even Spirit's car has been infected and takes her to poultry places all of its own accord. Naughty car! ;) And Kirsty wasn't very keen on birds just a week ago yet now she is totally hooked :rotfl: It gets us all does i-want-more-chickens-itis.

So while you may be thinking three right now, it might be best to plan for double that, at least. Maybe treble.... Maybe.. :o

ITS TRUE IVE GOT IT AND THERE IS NO CURE!!:rotfl:
I cant stop thinking about, reading about, googling about, spending time with my chicken!!!!
I have bought EVERYTHING listed anywhere for chooks , I have become obsessed with picking up her poop, (that might just me be and my ocds, I do this with bunnie poo, I dont collect it or anything, just like them to be clean)

My girl is a girl!!!! Which means my son and I cannot call her Bbbbrian Budundy from facejacker, Hubby calls her keith lemon,,as all she does is shi-ting which he says ;/ Other 2 kids call her Hetty of course !
Mate who has chickens came over, picked her up, we checked her for mites etc, she was fine! Has one wing clipped on one side already, she is young she thinks, perhaps almost ready to lay, as her (crown?) and wattles are nearly red but not quite bright enough apparently,,she gave me food advice.

She said she was a little thin, not scrawny but thin, she may have been wandering /hiding out for a bit b4 we found her. I did some investigations today. Apparently chickens near where we found her were got by a fox 3 or 4 weeks ago,,something ate them, over a month ago apparently, feathers and blood was all he had left, I told his grandmother I had found her 3 houses away, she said not his his were eaten,,she said he wont want one.
So could she have hidden for a month with no one noticing/being eaten in a city street, back to back houses?
Unless someone comes knocking to claim her I am looking after her, had email to say worm stuff has been dispatched, so may arrive tomorrow. Friend said as she is thin she may be piggin out on food and its sticking on her throat, an she is stretching it out, but I will worm her with flubenvet as a matter of course anyhow.
She followed chatting to me everywhere today, at one point after i hung washing out I sneaked back down the garden, came into kitchen and put kettle on, said to hubby that chicken is following me everywhere, then I heard a 'Bok BOK' there she was head on side peering through back door!! Soo funny! I took her back up the 4 steps into garden and sat with her, she let me stoke her loads, she crouches down and boks quietly. I was a bit scared earlier I sat on bench and she came over and looked like she was working out how to sit on my lap, I am not ready for our relationship to move quite so quickly hahaha I stood up I was scared!
Sorry for chicken ramble again!! :o its the disease I cant help it and no one else quite understands, this chicken thread is like my counselling session.

Kirsty it sounds like you have become her chicken buddy. Digger my poorly hen who is much better now is being bullied by the other 2 so lives in a pet carrier. I take her outside to freerange and if I go in to make tea she comes and stands on the doorstep bokboking. Then we share a rich tea biscuit together.

The squirrels are driving my other two mad. They are always sneaking in to eat their pellets and today the baby had the cheek to eat all their porridge.(sounds like goldilocks lol)
