Hi the thing you found is quite common and is basically an egg that gets stuck in the chicken before getting coated in calcium to form the shell. it basically gets hard boiled by the heat of the chickens body. It is a sign that the egg laying days of that particular chook maybe coming to an end.
Just throw it away.
Thanks ljonski, it's a shame if it is the end of her egg laying days, butas long as it's not a sign of poor health that's what matters to meApril 2021 Grocery Challenge 34.29 / 2500 -
Sorry to say Chucky has just died within the last hour, leaving Stoogy alone. She had rallied, but old age has taken it toll. I have missed the rehoming day on saturday, but there will be another at the end of June.
She was over 3 and a half and it was a pleasure to have known her.

I'm so sorry ljonski,
How is Stoogy? Has she realised yet?0 -
Stoogy is really well and still laying, but it will be over the next few days as weather her attitude changes. Chickens only have a 2 day memory span, however i have just locked her up on her own for the first time.

I hope Stoogy is ok. I didn't know about the 2 day memory span, that explains a lot!
I wonder about hens sometimes. I have 7 plus a small rooster left and they live in 2 houses with runs, which I moved at the weekend.
Tonight I went to lock them up and found 6 hens plus the boy all squashed up in one house and one girl, snuggled up contentedly in her favorite nest box, in the other!
Time to get them a large house they can all live in together perhaps.0 -

That made me laugh. I didn't know their memory was that short either.0 -
Sorry to hear about Chucky.
Is it possible they may have some hens left that weren't picked up at the weekend?0 -
the rehoming is on saturday 19th, but website is closed for applications."if the state cannot find within itself a place for those who peacefully refuse to worship at its temples, then it’s the state that’s become extreme".Revd Dr Giles Fraser on Radio 4 20170
