Has anyone here had similar and is this a major problem for this chook or will she be okay and I'm over-worrying?

I haven't, but I've read about bumblefoot and it sounds similar.

Thanks Gigervamp. Just read it now and it does sound similar, except I couldn't see any entry poitns earlier (I was careful to look as I suspected she'd got something stuck in her foot). Am now wondering what she may have caught herself on if that's what it is?

They don't perch - I removed the naffola ones from the prefab hen house I bought as they kept knocking the things off the holders every night and I suspected they'd do themselves more damage than good, and they've seemed perfectly happy since.

I'm wondering how I'll keep her clean if it is and needs lancing.. as clean as I make the area one minute, one of the 8 birds will have poo'd in the area again soon enough! lol And other than coming in the house I don't have a seperate coop she can be in while she heals

We have a cat box which we use when we have a poorly chicken and the kitchen becomes the hospital ward.

Digger is in a dog carrier/cage (a bargain @£24 from Aldi.) I just cover it up at night so she is in the dark.
  • :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Giger, another chick, 3 Silkies and what a beautiful orpie! I loved the way she wasn't taking any nonsense from Blackie and got your OH to give her "the tour". And wow! Haven't those chicks grown fast! :D If I had your space and set up I wouldn't be able to resist getting more. Note to self - get more junk cleared from the allotment to make more room for chooks.

Your Sweetpea reminds me of my little Angel, if Angel laid blue/green eggs I'd wonder if they were the same breed, but Angel's are very tiny cream ones. I'll try to get a pic of her and her hubby this afternoon, and post it to see what you all think she might be. She isn't very tame so it won't be easy. :o

    Hi All

A really dumb question but is there a certain time of year to hatch chicks or is it done all year round?

    Much appreciated.

  • Hi there

Thought I would introduce myself. I have been on MSE for a while now but as of Sunday I am now keeping 3 lovely hens! They are small brown speckled hens. Mack, Mabel and Marmalade are doing really well, although Marmalade managed to escape over a 6ft fence and into the allotments at the back of our house yesterday. Took 3 of us to catch but fortunately we did and she is fine!. We got 2 eggs yesterday, lovely brown ones, and I know I have at least 2 today but have to wait until my daughter comes home for her to find them.

Got some work to do on the coop today to ensure no more escapees ...

Just thought I pop in and say hello. :j

    Welcome :)

Your hens sound lovely. Clipping one wing will keep the escapes down (it is like us cutting our nails - painless). Here is a description of how to do it.

I read on here that they sometimes dig their way out so it might be worth checking the bottom of your fences too :D
