  • Thank you both. At the moment I've been giving away or trading spares. I shall have to start being a bit more commercial.

I think that officially (according to defra) you should sell them in new boxes. I don't know many people who always give them in new ones though ;)

i initially bought a few packs of boxes from the BHWT and then some people collect others for me. I steadfastly refuse to use the placcy ones which were originally from caged hens.

  • I have some new boxes so can use them, and maybe do some nice labels for them too :D

I've lost my first hen today. She had been ill, then perked up last night after a day in the sunshine but I found her lying on her side this morning, unable to get up. I brought her indoors, got some fluid into her and put her in a box in a quiet spot. She just went to sleep and when I've checked on her just now she has gone. Poor little Nugnug, she was such a good layer and a lovely friendly hen.

    So sorry Heather.

My little Digger was doing so well until yesterday when she flew into the edge of the doorway. Now her tum is swollen again and she's very quiet. But she ate some soreen today and sat in the nest.

Hi, just wanted to pop in and say hello! I was recently given two hens (a rhode island red - maisie and a white sussex - frenzy) and am hoping to get two more in the next couple of weeks :D. I always have loads of questions but reading about your chickens in great and has answered a lot :).

I look forward to 'speaking' to you all

    We have another chick! :)

When we put eggs under Petal, we discovered that some of the other girls were laying in the same box. As they were all blue eggs and the pencil markings that we'd put on the original ones had rubbed off, we couldn't tell which were which, so left them all under her.

As she was joined by other broodies, when we took her out after the first 2 hatched we left the other eggs and one hatched tonight.

Littl'un is now tucked up, cheeping away under our pekin in a cat box in the kitchen.
We originally tried putting Toots the broody legbar with the chick as it was under her in the nesting box, but she got very agitated and had a peck at it. When we swapped her for the pekin, the pekin made mummy noises and settled down to let the chick under her. :)
  • Oh wow! :j :j What colour is the new one Giger? Is your OH busy with the camera yet? :)

All of the new chicks arriving make me feel so much better about my girl. Circle of life and all that. Thank you all so much for your messages, it is good to know there are others who understand. :A
