I have just purchased a Win 8 laptop and upgraded to 8.1.
I've now had to pay an extra £5 for going over my 10GB limit! :(

Win 8 had to updated first before I could upgrade to 8.1 so this whole thing shows as 3.6GB on one day.

If I'd thought about it I'd have waited until after midnight when my ISP (Plusnet) allow unlimited use.

I don't have McAfee anti virus, warehouse. Would that influence broadband usage under 'other?' I was concerned at first because I
didn't know what sort of things were included in 'other' usage.

    Thanks, Crimson

I might have been in the same situation, Garetha, but I noticed the usage quite early. Was it easy for you to find out what had gobbled up your allowance?

Because mine was under 'other' usage I only found out through this helpful forum because it didn't say what sort of usage was included in 'other.' When you click to update something would that also use broadband allowance under 'other?'

I'll now be extra cautious before I click to download an upgrade in future - learning all the time!

I'm with BT, which doesn't give me a breakdown of types of usage. What categories show on your bill, besides 'other'?

Apart from not indicating what 'other' includes, it's really good, Googler:

Usage before midnight plus the free usage midnight to 8 am
    Web
    Email
    BB phone calls
    Gaming
    Streaming
Plusnet FTP (although I don't know what that is)
    Peer to Peer
Other (I don't know what falls into this category apart from downloading upgrade to Windows 8.1!)
and FTP non Plus net - again I don't know what this is.

Plusnet as an ISP is usually really excellent - especially technical support.

Unlimited is the way to go - if it is available and at a reasonable price of course.

There was a lady here at work who's broadband useage went absolutely bananas when she worked from home and connected to the office via VPN. After a lot of investigation it was found to be McAfee that was eating up to 50gb per month. Removed and re-installed and all was good again.

She was with BTInternet who gave her an exact breakdown of what was being downloaded, but not by what application.

We've been with PlusNet for over 10 years now, and they've always been pretty good. My main grumble would be that they don't tell you when they change their packages, so it is worth checking their website every now and again to see if you are on the best deal. 10GB is a very low allowance, so unlimited is a much better deal if you think you might go over it.

Thank you very much. That solves the problem and I really appreciate it. Maybe I should know by now but I didn't realize that a 'download' gobbled up broadband allowances. I, wrongly, just imagined it was ordinary broadband usage.

It's not that long ago that I learned that watching a You Tube 'how to' clip counted as streaming. There is always so much to learn!

I'm slow to learn but it is really helpful being given such useful information via this forum.

    Thank you everyone.

Your 10GB allowance measures all data usage, up and down, not just downloading. Streaming, sending emails, viewing a web page, it all counts.
However in this case the cause does seem to be the 8.1 upgrade.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
