Hello

If anyone has any ideas I'll really appreciate it. Of my broadband 10 GB monthly allowance I have used over 50% under 'other' in broadband usage.

I don't stream videos or television and I don't gamble on line. I only browse the internet and do on line banking etc. on my laptop and on my tablet. My router has a secure connection with password etc.

The only thing I can think of is I clicked to change from Windows 8 to 8.1 and it took nearly three hours to complete. Would this gobble up so much of my 10 GB allowance?

My ISP wasn't able to help and I would need to contact another department - but, as it is under 'other' they weren't sure if it would be at all possible to identify what is being used under 'other.' I would really like to know what I am doing that I don't normally do - and I'll stop doing it if it may take me over my 10 GB monthly allowance.

If you have any suggestions please let me know.

Many thanks

Thank you very much, debitcardmayhem. Does that mean that the download to 8.1 is likely to be what has made my usage shoot up? If it is I'll feel better knowing and, as I won't be doing that on a regular basis, it shouldn't become a problem.

    Many thanks.

W8.1 is between 2.5 and 3.5GB download depending on whether you are running 32 or 64 bit.

Thank you very much. That solves the problem and I really appreciate it. Maybe I should know by now but I didn't realize that a 'download' gobbled up broadband allowances. I, wrongly, just imagined it was ordinary broadband usage.

It's not that long ago that I learned that watching a You Tube 'how to' clip counted as streaming. There is always so much to learn!

I'm slow to learn but it is really helpful being given such useful information via this forum.

    Thank you everyone.

Thank you very much, closed. I'll look at the link you have given. I'm trying to be economical in my retirement but, as I'm really weak with technology, I usually stick with what I know. Change isn't easy and sometimes the upheaval is a bit daunting!

    Thank you, again.

Just to make sure, you have changed the password in your router since you got it - yes?

Gtoogle your ISP and router model and "admin password" and you will find the default password, follow the instructions and change the password to a strong one (not your cats name) - "google how to set a good password" if your stuck with that.

This will prevent the neighbours using your wifi.

if the wireless password is set, the admin password doesn't matter.

Thank you mttylad - a very trustworthy chum helped me when my router was new and I think I have quite a safe password - but I really appreciate your advice.
