However, there is a still relevant bit of caselaw - _any_ official of the DWP giving bad advice can be a relevant reason for someone not to do something - even including a security guard.

I am in receipt of carers allowance/IS (my son gets DLA etc) and last year I was called in for an awful interview where a lot of scaremongering went on. I was told I wasn't a carer (most definitely am), my son wasn't attending school (thank god I had a letter proving he was), that when my son turned 18 it would be called a change of circumstances and he would automatically go onto PIP instead of DLA (this was told to me by the supposed specialist dealing with carers/those on disability benefits). All this was told to me with expressions of 'great concern' in one breath (they knew my health wasn't good) and quite a bullying attitude the next. How I got through it I still don't know. I waked out incredibly upset because at one point it looked like I was going to lose all benefits and they just weren't listening to anything I was saying. Unfortunately the 'interview' wasn't recorded so there was nothing I could do about it. All this because my then partner was going to start work at a self employed job.., they were convinced he was already working although their proof of this never materialised (although they said they knew where he was working.., quite magical when he wasn't). I did sort it all out eventually but it left the family in quite a mess for over two months.
All I was told was totally wrong. And very stressful. I can't remember it all. But did a lot of research and established it was all balderdash. Never forgotten the experience. And yes, was very angry, but don't and never have expected the JobCentre to be able/willing to tell you what you are 'entitled to'. They are there, I am afraid to try and cut benefit claims, not increase them. Sorry but that's the way it is. All you can do is as much research as possible, contact support organisations and not take anything the Jobcentre staff say as gospel. They are not social workers. Its not just bad/inadequate training.., its the 'cut benefit costs' criteria they work under.0 -
It's a combination of two things - the good training given years ago to staff, doesn't happen now, and either high staff turnover, it's impossible to keep up with rapidly changing rules.
Plus, DWP staff are now under pressure to cut claims, where they can.
It is up to claimants, with the help of independent agencies, if needed, to find out what they should be claiming, and although some backpay may be given, subject to the circumstances, compensation won't be paid.
Of course, there is a formal complaints process available.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.

she went back to a totally different role... one she had never carried out before.
they insisted that she saw customers immediately, but she dig her heels in and refused intil she had training.
my daughter takes her job seriously and likes to think that she actually helps her customers ( does seem like shes in the minority sometimes!)
after getting the union involved, she finally received the necessary training.
DWP staff are under so much pressure, and i'm not suprised that many of them are 'bullied' into performing roles that they are untrained and totally unprepared to carry out
