Hiring Van - out of date photo license questions...

  • You may be surprised. Avis let you hire cars without a valid photocard if you have a valid counterpart although I imagine that they may charge you for a "DVLA check" (~£10 IIRC). You'd also need a valid passport.

Find a couple of places that do van hire locally and call them. You never know.

I'm not surprised ;) An expired photograph doesn't affect your right to drive, insurance cover or anything else!

The licence to drive is valid until the 70th birthday, unless revoked, & an out of date photo doesn't affect this

If you are the one who wants to hire a van then why aren't you doing it on your own driving license?

    Maybe the OP can't drive.

No body will hire to him. Also when caught, he could be fined £1000.

    Is that really the case?

Is the paper part that comes with a photo license different to the one that I have got without a photo

Yes it's different, but has the same legality.

This thread is about hiring a van in the UK which I guess is difficult, but not impossible without an EU style Photo-Licence.

I doubt it would work abroad hiring a car on holiday for example.

But like everything else someone will come along soon to tell us it can be done - somewhere.

I can't see the point of NOT getting the latest type licence, or not renewing it after 10 years.

I doubt if many folks get fined £1000 though.

This is an extract from the booking confirmation from 2 months back.
    "Driver identification
A full driving licence (this will include the paper counterpart for a photo card driving licence) which has been held for at least two years and with the driver's current address must be presented on collection of the vehicle. For old paper licences, a passport must be presented to provide photo ID. For foreign licences, the driver must have held a full licence for 2 years. If the licence is not of EU origin or from a designated country (see list below) your licence must be accompanied by a valid International Drivers Permit.

    Designated Countries List:
Andorra, Australia, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Falkland Islands, Faroe Islands, Hong Kong, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Zimbabwe.

We do not accept any driving license that shows a ban of more than 56 days. This is due to the driving licence being invalid as the driver must reapply for a licence following a ban of over 56 days.

If a driver has a driving ban of over 56 days on their licence and advises they have reapplied for their licence, they will be subjected to a further enquiry at the hire desk which will involve the hire desk calling the DVLA to check that the driver is fully licensed. This will be charged to the customer at £10+VAT.

When collecting the vehicle, you will need to present two other valid forms of identification bearing your current home address from the following:

    - Bank statement
    - Credit card statement
    - Utility bill

The documentation must be no older than 3 months prior to the start of the hire. Where two of the above are not available, a valid passport, supported by one of the forms of identification above will be accepted. The documentation is required for every driver who will be using the vehicle during the hire period and must be presented when collecting the vehicle. All documentation must be original - photocopies will not be accepted.

** Failure to present the required identification may result in the hire being declined **"

I expect most hire companies will be pretty similar.

My husband and I have both hired cars several times in the last two years with out of date photo cards.
  • I hired a car and forgot to bring the photocard with me and Enterprise didnt have an issue with it saying the paper part is actually still the official license on its own - no idea how true this is and my card was in date, just sat at home.

Of cause life will be easier if its updated and generally it doesnt take long.

It's not true according to the Road Traffic Act
A licence shall be in the form of a photocard...
And if you're required by the police to produce your licence, you have to produce both the licence and the conterpart (linky).

That said, what documents a car hire company decides to ask for is largely up to them. I imagine they're happy to take your money so long as they feel sure one way or another that you have a licence, and that they'll know where to look if you don't bring the car back.

pretty sure it's invalidates their insurance if they don't take take photocopy of driving license. Most hirers will ask for both parts. I was required to take the paper counterpart with me when i hired.

If they take the expired license who knows - most likely will invalidate their insurance.

Not sure if they need to see evidence of additional drivers - might be worth a try signing up yourself and adding your friend as an additional driver. But not sure what happens in the event of a claim. Does it affect the drivers insurance or the primary rentee's insurance?

Yes accidents in hire cars are a disclosure for personal car insurance because they specifically say "have you been involved in any vehicle accidents in the last x years". Pretty sure they mention you being the driver during the accidents.
