I am currently with Sky for Phone/Broadband and like to switch to TalkTalk.

Sky says it cant give me a MAC code cause they say I am on SVBN and their computer systems is not allowing to generate a MAC code. What do they mean by this?

Is a MAC code required if you cancel the services with the current provider manually meaning not allowing the new provider to takeover/switchover meaning allowing current services to turn inactive then start a fresh order with a new provider? Or is a MAC code required for fresh orders and switchover/takeover orders?

Is it impossible to keep my existing Sky number?

TalkTalk say I have to pay new line install fee. Why is that when theres already a current BT OpenReach master phone socket that is currently active in the house?

  • You only need a MAC when transferring between BT based broadband services...Sky LLU (SVBN) and TalkTalk LLU are not BT-based. In theory you should be able to transfer from Sky LLU to TalkTalk LLU as i know a few people who have done this however 9 out of 10 times you'll be told its not possible. BT will happily let you move from Sky LLU (you'll probably keep your existing number) but then you'll have to sign up to a new 12 month contract. If you're set on moving to TalkTalk LLU, then you'll need to take out a new line from them and put a cease on your Sky LLU line which obviously means you will lose your number.

    Which providers are BT-based?

You mean a 12 month contract with BT after transfering to them from sky? I would go with BT however they are too expensive at the moment.

I have to cease on the the current phone line with sky? How do I do that?

I have to pay for a new TalkTalk phone line socket in my house?

ISP's such as BT (obviously), Plusnet, EE, Zen Broadband, IDNet, AAISP, Goscomb etc are all BT based.

Yes you would have to sign up to a new 12 month line rental contract with BT so probably not worth it.

Alternatively Tesco Broadband are good value for money (their LLU offering) and they should let you move from Sky LLU, do a search here for your exchange, if you have C&W LLU available then definitely worth considering Tesco otherwise don't bother (tesco runs on C&W network)

To get a cease on your Sky line, just call them and tell them you want to cancel your broadband/tel service but make sure you're out of contract and best to do this once you have your second line up and running to avoid being without a tel line/internet access.

To get a new TalkTalk line installed call them and they'll arrange that over the phone, you may get it free or at a heavily discounted price.

There have been a few reports of XYZ LLU to Sky LLU. None that I can ever recall Sky LLU to TT LLU.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Cheers for the clarification there, just a few more questions?

I clicked on my local exchange and can see sky and talktalk enabled at the exchange. Does that mean i can transfer to talktalk without hassle?

    also who are c&w?

Does a talktalk engineer need to come to my house to install a new phone line socket? If not then what am i paying the talktalk installation fee for?

If your exchange is Sky and TalkTalk LLU enabled it means they can offer you their ADSL2+ services. In theory it should be possible to transfer between LLU suppliers but quite often when you ring them they say it can't be done ("computer says no"). The only exception to this might be Tesco LLU broadband, because when i enter my TalkTalk LLU number on their website, their system says i can transfer to their full LLU service, ie their system recognizes my non-BT number. Why don't you try entering your details here and see what what Tesco's system says?
    http://www.tescobroadband.com/

C&W LLU is Cable & Wireless, now owned by Vodafone. Its normally used by business ISPs but a few non-business isp's such as Tesco use them and its a top class ADSL2+ network. Vodafone also use it for their 4G network backbone. Is your exchange C&W LLU equipped?

Yes if you ask for a new line (from any isp) then an engineer will need to visit your home to install a new tel socket hence the charges.

If you take out a new line from TalkTalk (or any other isp) then that will be your second line so would need a new master socket, new wiring etc hence the charge. You cannot have two lines in the same socket. Your old line would remain even if a cease (stop) is put on it, it just wouldn't be active.

Can talktalk use my existing bt openreach master socket in the house?

I dont understand i thought as long there is a BT phone socket in the house then any provider that uses a BT line for their services can use it right?

    As you said:

Which means TalkTalk won't let you move directly from Sky LLU. So your only options are:

    1) Move your existing line to BT (sign up to a new 12 month contract)
    2) as above but after joining BT, leave them to join TalkTalk immediately - probably the most expensive option
    3) Take out a new (second) line with TalkTalk and put a cease on your existing Sky line
    4) Possibly move your Sky LLU line to Tesco LLU
    5) Stay put with Sky...are they really that bad/expensive?
