What's the deal?

There are some good deals to be had on digital cameras at the moment. These might lack some of the whizz features of more expensive cameras but they are cheap for the specification they offer.

The cheapest digital cameras
  • £50, 6 MP, 3x optical zoom. Amazon is offering the Vivitar Digital Camera*, 6MP, 3x optical zoom for £50 including delivery. This is head and shoulders cheapest of its type. Do be careful if you're buying it though, when there's heavy demand (as happens when things go in the weekly e-mail) Amazon can change the price.
  • £60, 4MP, 3x optical zoom. Kodak is offering its C433 Easyshare camera for £60 including delivery.
  • £60, 5MP, 3x optical zoom. Amazon is offering the Samsung Digimax S500* for £60 and as it qualifies for its super saver delivery, delivery is free.

Digital Camera Jargon Busting

Megapixels

This is a measurement of the camera's image resolution. It works in much the same way as changing your computer monitor's resolution; a larger one increases the image quality.

Buying a camera with a high number of megapixels is no guarantee that you'll get a good picture in the end; there are other factors to take into account. Unless you plan to blow photos up to huge proportions, you won't need too many MP. Also, bear in mind that the higher the resolution of a shot, the more memory you'll need on the memory card.

Lens

The better the quality of your camera's lens, the better your pictures will come out. If it comes to it, it's well worth sacrificing a couple of megapixels for a decent lens.

Memory

Most digital cameras have a small internal memory, but if you want to take more than a few pictures, you'll need to buy an external (generally SD, but check) memory card.

Batteries

If you're planning to buy a camera which takes standard AAA's such as the Vivitar above, invest in some rechargeables; cameras generally eat up batteries quick, and you don't want to waste valuable shooting time tracking down new ones.

Already bought the Amazon camera?

If you have bought any of the Amazon cameras in the last 30 days for a higher price, there's a sneaky trick which means you can claim back the difference and get it for the current cheaper price.

Simply visit your account and look at each invoice from the last thirty days. Click on each item to view its current price. Compare this to the price you paid and if there's a difference, copy down the order number and go to the 'Return and Refunds Contact Form' page to report it.

IF YOU SPOT ANY OTHER CHEAPER DEALS PLEASE REPORT IT BELOW!

There is a very similar model at Superdrug - a vivitar with 5.2 megapixels from memory, priced £39.95. It comes with a waterproof case that looks like it might be for taking underwater pictures, but i didnt' ask - it could be my fantasy!. At least at Superdrug you can take it out and look at it. I forget the model number bur a friend got one and is delighted. They had them this afternoon at the Queensway branch in London.

Yeah, I was reading through the features of all the digicams listed above and found out about that too. Was about to post it but you beat me to it. 5x digital zoom without optical zoom is no good.

This one from Fuji doesn't seem too bad too:

I bought an Advent 5.2 megapixels camera from PC world for £50. Very fast, has a 2.5" screen and comes with a Pentax lens. Thought is was so good I bought another on eBay for £25. Bargain! I think PCWorld only sell the 7.2 megapixels one now (£79) but you can still get the 5.2 from ebay.
  • i bought 2 6MP cameras from my local ASDA store (Bromborough, Wirral) for £35 each. Made a decent fathers day gift. When i was there tonight there were a few on the shelf, although they only put out about 10 at a time to stop multi buys.

Umm... You might wanna correct that - the page the link points to says it has 3x Optical Zoom (so does samsung's spec page)

  • Sorry to spoil the news, but you have to be really careful when buying cameras, they are one of those items in which "you get what you pay for." Vivitar are budget cameras and come with cheap, plastic bodies and poor lenses/components. They are not likely to perform in the same way as more well known brands. A bargain that lasts a few months before failing is not much of a bargain, as my parents found out when buying one of these cameras.

You can get some very decent cameras for less than £100, well known camera brands such as Nikon, Olympus, Kodak, etc. These are possibly a better bet in the long run.

I have had a Vivitar camera for some time - bought from Misco, through Quidco ;)

It actually performs really well and has taken some stunning shots, I have had it about two years so don't have any reliability issues.

Whenever you're in doubt about a camera, google the "model number" and "review". Often sites like www.trustedreviews.com review digital cameras which is good as they always show you sample shots....
