Felimazole is only active in the body for 12 hours, so it is not effective to only dose it once a day. Whatever dose you are currently giving needs to be split in half and given twice daily. I asked my vet to check with the manufacturers and it IS ok to split the tablets as long as you take care not to become contaminated with the drug (wear gloves to cut/handle, wash hands after dosing)

Our vet prescribed it at one dose - 5mg once a day
He is STILL a big strong cat - up until now, he has been 100% healthy - so should get through an op ok ..
He has ALL the classic signs of hyperthyroidism

    Hyperactivity - (chasing "shadows")
    Always on edge
    Never ending appetite and thirst
    Constant Grooming
    Weight Loss
    Heart Rate 250 + bpm !!

    just no vomiting !

I assume (hope) that some of these will lessen ?
    When ?
Our vet likened it to a massive dose of Red Bull !!

I quote below from the Noah Compendium

    Felimazole® Coated Tablets for Cats
    Dosage and administration
    For oral administration only.
For the stabilisation of feline hyperthyroidism prior to surgical thyroidectomy and for the long term treatment of feline hyperthyroidism, the recommended starting dose is 5 mg per day.
Wherever possible, the total daily dose should be divided into two and administered morning and evening. Tablets should not be split.
If, for reasons of compliance, once daily dosing with a 5 mg tablet is preferable, then this is acceptable although the 2.5 mg tablet given twice daily may be more efficacious in the short term. The 5 mg tablet is also suitable for cats requiring higher dose rates.

    Right - update
Our cat started vomiting a clear but foamy liquid on Wed night (at 4am) and again (same time) last night (9 days in !!)
We went to see the vets this morning and were told to stop the Felimazole - so our baby is booked in for a thyroid removal on Thurs morning
Only one side is being removed first - which may necessitate a return visit later
I AM WORRIED THAT WE MAY LOSE OUR BABY !!

Just take it one step at a time. These periods are really rocky, but unfortunately necessary parts of life. Let us know how it goes.

Our cat is still vomiting - 2 days after stopping the treatment - he was being sick every hour last night from 2am !!
I am assuming (hoping) - that this will stop after the tablets disappear completely from his system ?
    We need some sleep !!

Less than 2 days to go before the Op - fingers crossed
I am concerned that he will scratch open his stitches when he comes round - will they fit him with a neck collar and also "bootees" to prevent this ?
The op is happening first thing thurs am - will they keep him in overnight ?

Also - how long before he is allowed out - after the op - because he is not one for staying in longer than necessary .......

He made it through the op, yesterday
He came home at 3pm absolutely full of beans - running around like a mad thing - and today he has been outside and has eaten as if nothing had happened
I was expecting a woozy cat - considering that he had been under a general anaesthetic - at about 10am yesterday - but no !!

He has a large scar on the front of his chest and he has been shaved over quite a large area - he is on liquid antibiotics for 4days.
I don't yet know whether the op has helped with the original problem - except that he slept in until gone 6am this morning !!
    So it looks promising !!
  • Our journey so far has been increasing levels of videlta, big kitten is now on 15mg, after performing her deluded pensioner routine on us for a couple of weeks (big kitten is 18). Initially she was on 5mg. Big kitten is huge and towers over the average moggie.

Asides from this big kitten has a few missing teeth, a cataract in her left eye, and an excellent vet. The vet in question has always been an avid thyroidectomy supporter, but big kitten lives up to her name and was 6kg at diagnosis at age 13. Surgery wasn't an option, (she had a reputation for being a neigbourhood bully and would steal food, she's done this most of her life).

Now big kitten is a slighty more slimline 4.4 kg, still too old for surgery, so we are saving for the radioactive iodine therapy. Our vet says you'd never put her age at 18, and says she's in good health otherwise. She still leaps from wardrobes now even though she's stabalised.

    Time for an update
He is still acting up - waking us up at 4am every morning - to be let out for less than 5 minutes
He is still eating enough to satisfy a horse
He is licking his scar on his front from the op - which was over a week ago - making it red raw
What can we do to stop this ?
He will not wear a collar
