Im not sure if this is in the correct place, so please accept my apologies if it isn't.

I started renting a flat in a block of 6 flat about 2 years ago. We had 4 purple (household waste bins) between the 6 of us. this was (just) manageable until the council recently changed collections to fortnightly rather than weekly

I have been in touch with the council and they want me to pay £20 for another bin.

I believe that this is unfair as it wasn't there before but more importantly it is only since they have changed the collections that it has become a major problem

could anyone give me any advice please?

Thanks, Gary

What advice are you looking for? Either get another bin or don't the council are not going to change their mind.

Talk to the other flat owners, if they are also suffering because of it, maybe you could all chip in together and get one bin per flat. £40/6 = £6.67 per flat.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

First of all check the council and see how many bins you should have as 4 bins for 6 dwellings seems an odd ratio. Secondly check what their policy is for people whos bins go missing/ damaged/ stolen etc

As this is a rented property its also worth involving your landlord in the issue, particularly if the council says there should be 6 bins and its the owners responsibility to deal with loss/ theft

Are the bins numbered at all? (i.e. with the flat numbers).

How many of those 6 flats does your landlord own?

I cant believe it is £90, thats shocking.
I had a small recycling bin at a house I have just bought. One email to the council asking for a bigger one and they brought it round 2 weeks later, and I keep the old one (not that I want it but cant complain on hearing this). All free.

One of my dad's neighbor's was so annoyed at the new wheelie bin that he showed how disgusted he was by setting fire to it in front of a council official.

A few weeks later when the binmen refused to lift his old metal bin he had to get another one - the council made him pay for it (I think it was about £35-40 back then).

Yes, as InsideInsurance says, check with the council.

Is it possible that they did supply six bins originally, and that two have since 'vanished'?

If so, then I see no reason why the council should supply more at no cost.

Why at no cost. If two bins have gone walkabout why should the council supply new ones FOC. I would have to pay for a new one if mine went missing, surely the landlord(s) and/or tenants should stump up the cost.
