New car tyres- lower quotes when husband phones!!

Hi, I needed 2 new tyres for my car so my husband phoned around several of the local garages and tyre centres for me to get prices.

Being fussy, I needed to know the make and model name of the tyres my husband was quoted for, so, the next day I phoned exactly the same places and was given higher quotes for exactly the same service.

The biggest difference was £5.50 extra per tyre.

I am shocked that this happens !

It might be that the price changed from one day to the next, although I fear your assumption may be correct.

There is a good chance you could find cheaper tyres online though. As a first stop I would try:

    www.blackcircles.com
    www.f1autocentres.co.uk

To help decide what tyres to get I would recommend:

    https://www.tyrereviews.co.uk

If you let us know the tyre size you are after people here may be able to recommend you something.

Thanks, I used the exact sites that you suggested to get a good idea of what was available - I needed the model name of the tyres so that I could read the reviews and make an informed decision.

Would you even know the difference between tyres?

Funny you should say that. I had no idea about tyres so I used my intelligence to research the different types and made a decision based on my findings.

  • Do some research on negotiation and have another go it getting a decent price then.

You say that you didn't know what tyres your husband was quoted for so how can you be sure that you were actually quoted for the same tyres? Just curious....how did you make sure it was the same tyres?

Sorry, it wasn't clear from my post.
My husband got the make of tyre but not the model.

When I returned the call I was given the same make, a higher price and the model.

The fact that all of the places you rang quoted a higher price leads me to believe that you were quoted for a different model tyre (although same brand). You would have phoned the first tyre place and then re-used that same model (that place gave you) to get the quotes elsewhere, and the fact that it's a different model is why the price would have been different. I can't possibly see every single tyre place being sexist. It just doesn't sound possible....

You do know manufactures make more than one model of tyre don't you?

    Of course!

Why would a local garage keep several different models by the same manufacturer with a difference of about £4 - £5 for each tyre. They wouldn't!

They would keep a range of manufactures and the most popular model of each.

    I'm afraid they do.

EDIT: Even if they don't stock it, they will usually quote you as they can order them in (from experience).

They could actually. Depending exactly what was asked they may well be quoting prices for tyres they don't physically have in stock as well, and would order them in as needed if you wanted them.

You have probably found this from your research, but tyres of the same model and size also commonly come in different speed ratings - if you and your husband didn't specify this to be the same this could also generate price differences of the sort you have found.

    Maybe

Exactly why I was so shocked.

The place where I eventually bought the tyres from were the worst offenders.
I visited the garage after the morning school run and got a quote with manufactures name and the model of the tyre- written on a card.

My husband and I returned later that day to buy the tyres and get them fitted . o/h stayed with my car while I used his car for the school run. He named the tyres that we wanted fitted to my car (manufacturer and model identical to the mornings quote) and they were cheaper by £5.50 each from the mornings quote.
