Nielsen demanding scanner sent back months ago

Hope this is the right board. I have had a letter from nielsen asking for their scanner back. My scanner was sent back months ago and im not sure if i still have the receipt. They said they have asked for it back several times but this is the first i have heard from them. Why would i want to keep a scanner only used for their program? Anyone got any advice on where we stand with this? They say they are going to start proceedings to recover the cost of the scanner? Can they do this and what defence have i got if i havent still the receipt, considering it was nearly six months ago i posted it back to them?

So is Nielsen a company and you bought a Scanner from them, and then sent it back? What were your reasons for sending it back?

What program? As above, I don't know what you mean. Presumably they don't necessarily think that you kept it though, but rather it was lost in the post.

I'm not totally sure what 'this' is. Did you have a contract? Did you buy goods and return them? What happened?

If you owe them money then they have much longer than 6 months to claim it from you (6 years in fact). But I have no idea whether you owe money or not.

probably better continuing on the Nielsen thread as people there have an understanding of what it is. I am guessing it is a device for shop and scan

It is shop and scan. They sent me a scanner which didnt work properly and i sent it back to them. They havent contacted me since until now. Why would they not? I just thought someone might know the legalities behind whether they can demand money for the scanner after all this time? I have posted on the nielsen thread but no reply and the moneysaving board directed me here.

The trouble here is Scootw1, no-one here understands why you had the scanner in the first place.

    Did you buy the scanner?

    Is the scanner your property?

Does the scanner perhaps belong to Nielsen and perhaps just lent to you?

How did you send the scanner back?

The scanner is used to scan all your purchases you make in a week. For doing this you are rewarded with points which you can redeem against products they have in their catalogue.

Nielson send the scanner to those takening in part free of charge. It remains the property of Nielson and they can ask for it back at anytime.

So the question is, how did OP send the scanner back? The OP mentioned a receipt, was this a receipt for a tracked courier? Can they contact this company to find out what happened to the parcel?

Not sure why there is confusion over this. Nielsen are a market research company who issue scanners to scan your shopping. The scanners are their property we do not pay for them. I sent mine back six months go as it was faulty. They should now be contacting the courier company not me to get it back. I wanted to know whether they could legally enforce getting the money back for the scanner after the time they have not contacted me.

There's confusion because you didn't specify in your OP and I've never heard of that scheme (and apparently neither have some others).

Did they send a courier to your house, or did you arrange and pay for the courier? If they sent it then as you say they should contact the courier, but if you arranged it then it's your problem as you're the one the courier has a contract with.

Either way, that brings me back to the receipt you mentioned. Was this for the courier?

If you owe them money then the statute of limitations is 6 years, so yes they can chase you for it after 6 months. I still don't know for sure whether you owe them anything though.
