And the topic of the day: the dogs next door are howling and barking. They have been for days now. I don't blame them, they must get lonely as the main couple that live there are on a long holiday, and no one else is in all day. But thats my party wall, and its impossible to relax, when its going on for hours each day. I know the couple are back soon, and I'm trying to hold on to speak to them, because otherwise its leaving a note, and I just don't want to do that.

Do you get on very well with your neighbours? It may be worth recording the howling. People in my parents' street had a similar problem and the woman in question was sure her darling dogs would never do such a thing.

Two minutes into a five hour recording, she started to believe in an almost evangelical way...
"Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)
"We were born and raised in a summer haze." Adele 'Someone like you.'
"Blowing your mind, 'cause you know what you'll find, when you're looking for things in the sky."

    Thanks both!

Recording them never occurred to me! The neighbours always have a long holiday in January, so the dogs are disrupted for a loooong time. The woman is pathologically apologetic, for everything except the things that actually matter, which carry on regardless (sounds a bit rant-y, sorry!). ( :) ).

Patanne, thats a good analogy, the noise that makes you pay attention and makes you want to do anything to stop it. It's never been like this before:
I think it's about to come to an end judging by the length of their holiday, and it's been quieter today, though not completely silent. I'm trying to leave no legal trace, sadly.

Just been on rightmove - downsizing a flat in my sister's town would, as I thought, liberate about £100k of dosh, which would make my retirement a lot easier, and they're still nice flats that are on sale at that price.

As for Adsense - its nearly 9pm, I don't *think* I'm going to be doing that this evening :):):)

£100k is a serious chunk of money, definitely worth thinking about a move.

I feel your pain about howling dogs.

In our old house (about 30 years ago), there was a young couple with an Alsation.

They went out a lot, and never took the dog with them. As soon as they left the house, the dog would howl until they returned, often in the early hours.

Fortunately they moved after a couple of years, but it was not good. I felt sorry for the dog as well

    Hi Goldie :)

You're right, I feel sorry for the dogs too - there are 3, German Shepherds, in these small-as-its-possible-to-get 3 bed semis. They have each other for company, thank heavens, but my guess is that they're bored :( and I feel awful knowing that, but I can't afford to let it get to me too much.

The £100k - thats best case, from a 3 bed semi to a 2 bed flat. Of course, as a single person who doesn't need space for offspring to come and stay, once I've retired a 2 bed flat will be fine - I'd like to have a garden, I really would, but the energy it needs might well mean I couldn't enjoy the social activities I plan to take part in again, much as I love the garden. And I'm hoping I wouldn't have to move *again*.

I did actually, patanne - I wondered if there might be a little one-off somewhere, and I'd prefer freehold. There were end-of-terrace houses (3 of them :) ) for between £280k and £300k, exactly the price range of my semi. Its not really surprising - that town is only about 10 miles away from mine. But I appreciate the thought, thank you!

I'm *so* late starting today! It was the storm that woke me at 5am this time :) I was jumping at a few crashes and bangs. Nothing's broken, at any rate.

I'm just finishing things off today - my payment has been applied to my tax bill, finally, so just the rebate to come next week; got to finish off the Adsense installation on the cat blog, and tidy up cos me and my sister are plotting my mum's birthday present, and we'll both need to be in front of my computer :D

Karma when it comes to flats you may need to factor in management costs as well for maintenance of the structure etc
    Must use my stash up!
  • I'm glad Storm Gertrude hasn't caused too many problems for you, KC:T. It was really bad here during the night and is still extremely windy but we're on the east of the country so are escaping the battering they're having elsewhere. I hope everyone and their property is safe:)

OH is pretty worried about our television aerial which is attached to the chimney stack. It's now leaning at a slightly precarious angle:eek: and any more severe winds might cause it to fall or at least spoil TV reception. There's no way he'll venture up there today though. We don't have satellite, this is just a new rooftop aerial that we had installed at the big change to freeview a few years ago. It's a whopper, I've never seen such a massive aerial. Luckily we don't have any neighbours and are well-screened by trees, otherwise I could forsee complaints about spoiling the countryside;)

Absolutely - I'm hoping to buy one that has the freehold shared between the leaseholders, but I know that's still unlikely. Most of the flats in the area are pretty new, but not brand spanking, so there *shouldn't* be too horrendous problems. And with £80k-£100k liberated, it should be okay. But you're right :)

Yikes  no, not a good day to be going onto the roof

Managed to get myself to pay attention to adsense - I've installed the first code onto the last post, but it looks like that has to be done at every new post - I think I need Mrs E, my lovely marketing guru, to advise me - all the instruction from google and wordpress definitely make assumptions about how much you know

Okay, tidying - erm, in tidying a container by the door, I've, erm, made things a *lot* worse :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: which is par for the course with tidying, isn't it :rotfl: I'm not sure how much I can be bothered to do today, though I think I need some lunch first.

    Hope everyone's having a productive day :)

Yes, it was blowy overnight. I heard a few creaks and groans around the house. I feel sensitive to any noises at the moment, due to the mice in the loft...... but they would have to have been very large mice to make that sort of noise!
