I have changed a tyre on the hard shoulder, late at night and on an unlit stretch of motorway and on the drivers side of the vehicle. An approaching lorry almost wiped my backside for me. It was a terrifying job but it had to be done.

Was it really worth the risk?

What you did was suicidal if you ask me.

There was no other option at the time, driving the stretch of motorway could have been far more suicidal. The driver had no RAC\AA cover and I could not just leave her stranded there.

Yes there was and by the sound if it you stopped illegally too which makes matters worse.

I wouldn't do it no. I'd call the breakdown service out and get them to recover me to the nearest services before letting them go and changing it myself.

Having stopped to check the odd tyre on the hard shoulder it's not a fun thought of stopping to change one!
  • No way - ever. I've seen too many wagon drivers going along with one half of their vehicle on the hard shoulder. Not worth the risk IMO.

One PC was killed, in Yorkshire I think whilst assisting a tyre change by a Lorry driver, in a marked car with flashing lights.
    Be happy...;)
  • If I can make it to the next services or exit then I'll wait until then. Otherwise I'll phone breakdown company out.

I might change it on nearside of car away from traffic but better if there is a passenger present to watch the traffic.

You would have to be crazy to want to change your tyre on the hard shoulder!

If your not a member of an aa type organisation, what choice do you have if you get a flat tyre.
