Internet slow, not sure why...

Options
I've got a few tabs open in IE7, one for AOL Live Help to complain about the slow speeds I'm getting on supposedly a 6.5MB service.

Also, in the first IE window things aren't moving at all, web pages won't load, but as soon as I opened a new internet explorer window things are fast again, why is this?

I run ccleaner each night before shutting down, and also I've installed ZOneALarm on this vista computer which also seems too much of a co-incidence with all these problems, any ideas?

Blackadder: Yes it is.
Baldrick: Hmm... that's cunning.

Are you using a wired internet connection or a wireless one?

THanks, the router is a wireless one but is connected to the PC via an ethernet cable, wireless is disabled so it's not someone else using the connection.

  • Try disabling ZoneAlarm to see if things speed up. Also go here:

And let us know your results :)

Have you tried turning off your phising filter in IE 7? This can really slow things down.

I've disabled ZA and done speedtest - things are still fairly slowish and this is reflected in the speed... :o

  • Ok that would hint that the problem might not be your computer, but might be either the line itself or your internal wiring :x

try unscrewing your MAIN phone socket box, and plug in your broadband (through your filter) directly into the test socket.

If you get faster speeds using that speed test, then your internal wiring is screwed... if not, then you have either serious line attenuation or your line is faulty. You could alwyas ring BT and ask them to do a line test...

Also find out how far away you are from your ADSL Exchange (assuming your using ADSL), http://www.samknows.com/broadband/maps.php?id=39

Does not look like you are on ADSL max to me! Where have you got this 6.5Mb from?
