I've had the mirena coil for nearly 10 years now (new one every 5 years) and it's the best invention ever. The first 18 months, my periods dwindled down to absolutely nothing. It doesn't affect my mood and no periods! It was a little uncomfortable having it fitted but paracetamol helps. Xx

And another one here - third Mirena coming to an end and no periods for about 16 years - no mood swings, no anything - it's bliss.

Going in and out is uncomfortable - couple of days with a hot water bottle though and you get five years of no trouble (and I'm a big baby).

The diaphragm resulted in daughter No's 1 AND 2.

Doesn't work so well when in the bedside drawer, and I have to confess the faffyness puts you off - well, it put me off I sort of thought 'I'll be ok this once'. Twice.

So its copper coil or diaphram, I have heard 2 horror stories about the copper coil and men who are rather generously endowed (desperately thinking of a polite way to say it lol) and the wire sticking into them painfully during sex. Has anyone else heard of this? I imagine it wouldn't help the mood any more than fitting the diaphram!

I can feel my Mirena strings when I do the monthly check but they're more like little plastic threads than wires. Hubby is a big lad but he tells me he's never noticed them. I've heard it's only when the strings are trimmed to the wrong length ie too long or too short that men notice them and this can be fixed, also it depends if you've got a tilted cervix or not and what angle the threads are coming out at. But it's not like you've got a couple of metal spikes up there!

Must admit I was tempted to have the mirena coil about 5 years ago. The hospital suggested a hysterectomy for my enlarged womb (sod that). The GP suggested the mirena coil but I'd been sterilized 10 years previously because I didn't want to take any more hormones and didn't want any more kids so I didn't really want to go down that route either.

I'm glad I stuck it out as I'm now menopausal and don't have periods. Its great, I don't get anaemic now. :)

I was never keen on the idea of the injections, if you have an adverse reaction, that's it, you're stuck with it for the next 12 weeks.

They told me when I had mine renewed last year at 48, so probably on the cusp, that it helps with menopause symptoms. They said I can have another one in 5 years time if necessary for that rather than contraception. Obviously the hormone doses are far far lower than HRT.
