Vendors not giving keys to EA

I have seen 2 houses where vendors don't provided keys to EAs and they always want to be present during views.

Is there any reason for this?

  • Some people don't feel comfortable with strangers in their homes when they are not there.

Others don't trust the EA agent to 'sell' the property to viewers so they want to be there to talk to the viewers and tell them all about the house etc.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

Round my way the vast majority of vendors do their own viewings. Only likely for an EA to do it if the house is empty.
I always thought this was the normal scenario everywhere.
  • My EA only did viewings when I couldn't be there and they always tried to get the viewer to go when I could be there. Easier for the EA for starters, less work for them.

We viewed 5 or 6 houses and only one viewing was done by the EA. It was completely useless - they couldn't tell us anything about the house, or even what the vendor's position was (whether they'd found something to buy). We were in there for about five minutes.
  • When we were selling out house, we didn't give the agent the keys. I wasn't bothered about them looking around my house when I wasn't there, in fact I'd have preferred to let people look round without me "looking over their shoulder", more the dog making a run for it as they let themselves in :)

It was also handy as I was able to answer questions there and then for some of the viewers

Umm bcuz it's their home & they don't want strangers wandering around without them being present.

Unfortunately all it takes is for one EA to leave a door unlocked, or let a pet out, for that vendor to never trust another EA with keys. All too common...

I don't like giving them keys (I don't want my cats scared or let out), but have done out of necessity on occasion.

Interesting. Round my way it's the opposite - the majority of of viewings seem to be done by the agents - I didn't do any of the viewings on my house, and only 2 (out of about 28-20) of the properties I looked at were with the vendor, although there were a couple where the agent was showing me around and the vendors were still there.

As a buyer, I'd prefer to have the first viewing with the agent, and the second (if there is a 2nd) with the vendor.

Never trust a man with a very wide tie and hair gel.

I assume they are more comfortable dealing with people - some people are very shy or don't want anything to do with strangers asking stupid questions.
