Am I over organising?

Hi all,

As I have posted previously we are planning on getting married October 2015. I have a list of things I need/want to do, a list of budgets, a timeline etc, realistically how much is too much planning given that we have 21 months until the big day?

Ideally I'd like to have everything sorted so that I'm not running round stressing for the last 3 months! I'm ordinarily a very organised person, but I don't want people thinking I've gone mad because I already have my favour boxes and invitations with 20 months to go {I haven't but just an example!}

Thanks in advance.

  • No you can never over plan! I have everything organised down to the last detail.

    BUT

That won't stop something going wrong. Last night I found out some truly terrible news. The lady who is making our cake her 7-8 year old daughter has passed away I am totally stunned for words and truly truly upset about this awful time in her life :( We have 10 weeks to go.

I'm also getting married in October 2015 and it's a tough one. I wanted to at least book the registry office and the venue now, but my partner refuses to do anything until a year before the wedding.

A friend of mine getting married at a similar time has already booked the venue and the photographer, but I believe she has gone for popular ones that do book up two years in advance. So I think if you have already have a venue, photographer, or cake maker in mind that book up quickly (they will generally state this on their website) you go ahead and book to avoid disappointment.

My partner's reasoning for waiting is that we may change our mind on various things and wish we hadn't been so impulsive. I do see his point- I'm quite fickle! Perhaps you could at least start researching things now, then nearer the time you'll hopefully have a firm idea of what you want.

It sounds that, like me, you are both excited and anxious to get it done and avoid any stress on the way. You could speak to some vendors you're interested in and give them your wedding date. They'll know from experience what time people tend to book and be able to advise you accordingly.

Oh Steph - that is awful. I have a 6 year old DD and the thought of that is just soul destroying. I feel so genuinely sorry for your friend at this incredibly sad time xxx

    Thanks Fuzzyduck,

Yes where we are getting married is quite popular, so we are meeting the wedding coordinator on 1st Feb to discuss things, we won't pay the deposit yet though. I have emailed photographers, entertainment, and researched the theme {autumn} and printed off pictures to give me ideas. I have also researched ideas for favours, invitations and place cards etc.

We have already opened an account to save into.

I haven't spent a penny yet though! :money:

  • As a wedding photographer and having got married myself recently, I would recommend that you get suppliers booked early who can only do one wedding a day. So photographer, entertainers, DJ/band, toastmaster (if you are having one). That way you are picking the suppliers you want rather than who's available.

The rest you have plenty of time for.
  • Thank you so much gadgeteer - toast master is included in the wedding package at the hotel, Venue we have sorted but yet to pay deposit, photographer and DJ/bands we are looking into.

Your partner needs a kick up the butt!

I proposed in January last year to get married at the end of March this year.

It took us about two months of researching venue brochures for things like price, location, etc so it was exactly a year before the wedding that we actually started attending viewings of the venues themselves.

I would say that we booked the venues, photographer, flowers and hair and makeup people roughly 12-10 months before the wedding and even that far in advance we found that a lot of our first choice selections were already pretty booked up.

I would strongly recommend you get the venue at least booked around the 10-12 month mark and the photographer not long after

As for the OP, there's no such thing as over planning.

My cousin got married in the summer and really did wing it so about 4 weeks before the wedding she was stressed to hell trying to work out the total budget, squeeze in hair and makeup trials, buy gifts for the bridal party, etc.

In comparison, I've got mine planned down to the last detail even as far as already having envelopes with the correct money in them for the DJ, photographer etc so am actually looking at quite a relaxed 9 weeks between now and then!

I don't think it hurts to get everything organised early, especially if you know what you want...

that said, we're getting married in May and I've only just got round to starting to plan things...I'm a lazy bride.

Now YOU are my kind of person, that is EXACTLY how I do things!!!

Good luck and congratulations for your wedding x

I am usually organised in general, but I do sometimes envy those who are laid back, I'm always anxious {to the point of needing counselling} anyway and stress at the slightest thing!
