The new firmware for your router (if available) is usually downloadable from the website of the router manufacturer. You can d/l to any computer connected to the router (preferably by wire). It may be a zip file which will need unzipping before use.

Edit:- Just noticed you're on BT Home Hub, check this site for more info since this should be an automatic process :-

Check for any possible causes of interference or signal blocking, eg. DECT Phones, phones with no ADSL filters, Microwaves, Video Senders, Neighbours' routers etc

So what exactly happens, do you lose the signal completely on the laptop or do you still have a signal but no connection?

One thing to remember ... laptops are designed to save power and can do so even if still plugged into mains. One way that some manufacturers save power on a laptop is to make the signal processing from wireless functions lower to reduce the power usage. Another odd thig that can happen, and have seen on some laptops, is that the wireless reciever is actually badly placed in the actual laptop itself and other parts of the laptop are affecting the signal quality, i.e. something you can't change unless you get a new laptop or perhaps a slot card for the wireless connection (PCMCIA).

Hope this info helps shed a bit of light on a possible cause.

I have complete and normal access to net via wireless connection then at approx 5 mins in I loose it completely and have to reconnect which sometimes i can do very quickly and others it takes a few mins - however I have the pc connected at the same time again via wireless and that stays connected at all times.................signal is strong and there it goes again so will have to reconnect before I submit this, I have tried with pc connected and not connected but same result

Have checked for updates on wireless thing on laptop cannot find any, bt hub running latest version of firmware, checked firewalls etc all seem set ok to permit access seems very odd that at same lenght of time I get cut off .

I have looked at so many different things to sort this I am now confused and baffled, I have uninstalled re installed, tried repair rebooted all equipment ............prolly something really simple on laptop set up it is a samsung r40plus on xp pro using firefox browser

Does that mean that you are using a USB wireless dongle?

Are you using windows zero config or the software that came with the wireless adaptor?

OK..... this DEFINITELY souns like something to do with your laptop power saving settings. For some reason it seems your laptop, in an effort to save power, is turning your wireless device in your laptop off thinking it is not in use (even though it actually is). Because your PC is fine connecting we can discount signal strength, router and anything else that is not directly related to the laptop. Maybe get a hold of your laptop manufacturer, if it is still under warranty they will be more keen to help you get it fixed while your at home instead of take it in which really is more convenient anyways .. hehe.

Hope that helps .... sorry I can't give a definite solution but variations in power management happen across the different brands.
