  • LB How about putting some ping pong balls in the chooks water? Should be light enough to be moved about by the breeze or movement of the water which hopefully would stop the water freezing.

. But one full in the face about 1am, had me wide awake :rotfl:.

Ewww, LB, you need to teach her some better manners :rotfl:
Hope she gets over it soon.

Yes, definitely time for PJs and feet up. I'm another one whacked out from work, have been driving on patches of black ice, and a bit of the white stuff (thankfully not too much). Really bitter cold today, I had so many layers on I must have looked like a michelin man...I don't care what I look like (I'll look really slim when I peel them all off in the spring lol) A car nearly drove into me today, we met on a narrow road and I pulled to the side, but when he braked he was sliding all over the road...good luck that we didn't connect. I just saw his shocked face as he went by :rotfl: maybe he shouldn't have been going so fast on the ice.

Really tense after all that so been for a lovely warm bath, and now waiting on takeaway arriving :D
It doesn't matter how wet or cold I get when I'm working, cos I really appreciate my house...it's so lovely coming home and having a warm bath and sitting at the fire. I know I'm very lucky, I often think how horrible it would be to not have somewhere warm to go.

I wish I had my presents wrapped, all still to do. May...just may, it's very early for me...put the decorations up tomorrow.

    Have a lovely Sunday everyone.

cannot see the numbers on the digital clock on the swipe machine. I now have to work a full 8 hour shift tomorrow without a break to make up for not working on Wednesday so I will be working from 10-6pm.

Under the Working Time Directive you have to have 20 mins break per 6 hours of work. Not only breaking UK law but EU law if they don't let you. I know it's not easy to stamp your foot though when you've just started a new job. Hope it went ok!

I put ping pong balls in their water yesterday afternoon, but these are stopping the chooks drinking this morning..... spooking them :rotfl:

    Ah dear! :rotfl:

Also, they prefer to drink out of plastic dog dishes, so it's a small amount of water, with a small surface area, and under cover so no breeze. I doubt the balls will do the job in really freezing weather.

But thanks for trying to think of solutions for me :T

Bluebelle (who has been in moult for the last few months) has finally regrown her feathers, and promptly become broody . I'm back off to the hen run soon with the sin bin to try to break her out of that as quickly as possible :(.

LMMM is pretty much back to normal. I couldn't sleep last night, so was watching a film at 3am, with her tucked in purring beside me. She'll be back to being the naughty teenager, who doesn't want cuddles, again soon, so I've made the most of her need for comfort. :)

Gawd, am so shattered. 7 work days to go to what I hope will be a lovely gentle break. I'm going to do slow roasted lamb and veges for later.

Enjoy your Sundays, whatever you are up to.

    LB xx
  • LB I was googling on the net when I came across the idea about the ping pong balls. This website has some other ideas http://fresheggsdaily.com/2013/10/five-easy-ways-to-keep-your-chickens.html

Yes, I saw that yesterday, thanks. That's where I got the idea for ping pong balls, too. But the problem is that for other solutions, I don't have electricity, nor can you really insulate dog bowls as they are too flat though I have put a couple of their dishes on top of much folded insulating material, which may help. I'm also not up for leaving unprotected flames around live animals, so that rules out tea lights under plastic dishes  or any other type of dish for that matter.

As for some of the wilder designs that others have set up - pipes, huge water buckets, hoses. I can imagine these may be necessary where winter temps are constantly very low but Bloomin Heck! Nope, I don't have the room or practical skills for those. And some talked of how they'd set up stuff with electricity and managed to electrocute their birds . Em.... no thanks! :(

I've removed the balls this morning as the girls were really spooked by them. :o

    :p

I think the microwavable thingymajig will do the job for me. Someone on another web page recommended it. Arriving Thursday, I hope, and will try it over the Xmas hols, see what I think, and hopefully order another couple.

I'm expecting to need to work long hours/away across the country in January, so do need to find something to allow me to be away 14+ hrs. The water doesn't need to be unfrozen all that time, just long enough for them to get through a freezing morning, into early afternoon, and then they go to bed with these short dark days.

The good news this afternoon is that "Blue-by" had un-broodied herself so the sin bin is in the hen run but not used at the mo :T
It seems her hormones are all over the place at the mo, but we know all about that, don't we, Ladies? :rotfl:. If only we were allowed to hunker down in bed when our hormones run riot, eh? :rotfl:

;)...I'd never be out of bed... ;)

Yum, my lamb with garlic and rosemary is starting to smell bloomin lush as it cooks slowly.

  • While there's a bit of a convo about hours, I have a query, I know it's half an hour break for working 8 hours, but is that the same for 8 1/2 hours work? I'm flummoxed and have searched online but to no avail. Cheers in advance guys x

    Hello peeps

Sorry didn't log in yesterday - I was not in the best of moods. I nearly got killed on the pelican crossing going to the bus stop - this idiot decided he didn't want to stop at the red light and carried on speeding, good job I was walking slow otherwise I would just be a bloody smear on the road, he missed me by an inch:eek:. A chap who had stopped at the lights got out and asked me if I was ok - I was pretty shaken up, the speeder stopped about 50 yards down the road and then sped off (I couldn't get his reg number).:(

I turned up for my double shift (a shift that did I not need to do because it pushed my hours up to 20 and now they are back down to 12:mad:) I tried telling the management but they refused to listen. I did have half an hour break at about 3pm so spent time in the staff lounge eating free fruit. I managed to swipe out at 18.11 which was one minute over the time I was supposed to swipe out and that was due to my supervisor. After 6pm the buses seem to be on a go slow, I picked up a bus at 6.30pm outside of work that dropped me in the town and then I had to wait for over half an hour for a bus home. The bus did not take me all the way so had to get off in Longbridge (I was so hungry I nipped into the chippy and came out with some kebab meat and chips), I had a long walk to the bus stop to pick up a bus going the way I wanted. I waited for a further 20 mins and a 45 came (driven by an ex BF) so I got off at the stop by the pelican crossing (it is safer than trying to work out the speed of the traffic) and then had a mile walk home. I got in at 8.45pm:mad:

I turned up for work today and was told impolitely to get on the shop floor, I had to say that I did not feel confident on the till because I had only had 15 mins training and although I was speedy scanning I was slow when it came to the cash drawer (I only saw the inside of it once). I was then yelled at to go the caf!, the girl who yelled is not a nice person yet she deals with all the rosters. She made a sarcastic comment about my visual impairment too - which made me feel rotten all day. I think I will make a phone call tomorrow to see how they are going to make reasonable adjustment for me. Tried talking to management again but was brushed off, my supervisor was too busy to care. I was told off for being inflexible too because I cannot get there for 7am - I can get there for 8.00am, I am reliant on buses and the earliest bus is 6.14am and it takes an hour, and then I have another bus to get. Excuse the rant and the grumble.

Managed to buy some lovely C cards in B00ts - they were half price. I need to finish my cards, send them in the post. Tidy the house and put my tree up, need also to go to my GP to drop my prescription request off otherwise I will be without drops over C.

Have a great week everyone x

Tomorrow I will be mainly sleeping and wearing a heat pad (I nipped into B00ts today and bought some along with some strong ibruprofen tablets because my back is always painful.
