Noticed the new signature "Mortgage so small I can hardly see it":T

You've done well there knocking it down so much and I think it was very wise of you to do that.

I remember when I managed to pay a very substantial part of my mortgage off and it felt good to know it was down to "nominal" levels of only a few thousand £s.I got various tiny chunks of money and used each one to pay off a bit more and that meant a while of going in saying "Here, have a cheque for another £1,000 off the capital:)" a few times. Then it went down, tiny chunk by tiny chunk to around £1,000 and it was that point I thought "Virtually invisible now...all but gone". Another tiny chunk and there it was gone:).

Basically, I think I must have paid back my 25 year mortgage in about 13 years in the event and it did make life feel a lot more secure.

Are you down to my "virtually invisible" level yet or still counting the thousands of £s on one hand? Even counting thousands of £s to go on one hand (and that was some years back) had me sitting there thinking "I defy anyone to try and say I'm a bad money manager ever, when I've managed to do that all on my tod:p".
  • ...and my house news for the day is that there are, apparently, some roads in Britain where it's still the Middle Ages (you know = that era of lords and serfs that we read about in the history books).

So, fast forward to its now the 20th/21st century and all that has long since been abolished and we know that people are equal and its a democracy, we've all had the vote for decades, etc, and then go and live in an unadopted road of the type where the houses in it are down as having to pay towards communal road maintenance. Fair enough and we know its 21st century Britain, so the expectation is that, of course, we automatically get consulted and give our views and these views have equal "weight" to anyone else's (including the road-owner) and wait for your due consultation and democratic right to a voice about things and you might find you've got in a time machine and warped back to the Middle Ages and the road-owner acts like the "lord" and you are treated like the "serfs" and just get told how things are and they have made everyone else's share of decisions, as well as their own. Then find the law doesn't seem to have been updated to allow for everyone involved having their right to take part in the decision-making process.

Then keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't come to a Small Claims Court hearing about it and, if it does, that the judge realises its the 21st century and this is a democracy and disagrees with the "feudal system" and road-owner acting like "lord of the manor" with all decision-making being done by them alone.

But, as at right now...then just hoping road-owner has enough commonsense and is aware enough its now the 21st century that there won't be any "timeslip problems". Should be okay and not find I've gone "time travelling" inadvertently...so fingers crossed that all will be well.

Have always fancied being able to do a bit of time travel, but this wasn't quite what I had in mind...

Think the situation will resolve fairly/according to modern day way of thinking/etc. Just think of the funny side of "dining out" on the tales of "pockets of feudalism still around". But I have enough tales to tell of some recent local "happenings" to cover a couple of meals out already and am working on accumulating enough for a novel:rotfl:. Always fancied being "the writer in garret" that suddenly got discovered and made millions of £s.

    Hi all

Sorry to hear about the woes and the loss of OBC. I got up late this morning, my fault for going to bed at 2am and as I leapt out of bed I promptly pitched myself face first into my dressing table (glad no-one was watching).

I haven't been shopping yet - it might be a job for tomorrow when it is quiet and I have to go to Mr T's as well because I have some vouchers for some free spuds, carrots and apples/pears. Of course I have to give feedback to Mr T's and spread the word far and wide but if it means that I have something for free then I don't mind.

Re the F1 - the Japanese race was last weekend and normally they have a break around now and then the final race is somewhere like the Arab Emirates, there is a new race in Russia this weekend.

My uncle's bowel cancer was discovered at a well man's clinic and he was in hospital the next day (this happened over the May Bank Holiday), he was quite poorly for a while and developed heart problems and an infection whilst in hospital. He has had to get used to having a temporary colostomy bag too. Whenever I have emailed him he tells me how bored he is but at least now he doesn't have to do the shopping which is a bonus (a chore he hates), he reads a lot too and I have suggested that perhaps when reading becomes tiring that he get some audio books to listen to. He is mum's baby brother and therefore a favourite of everybody. I remember when I was little - dad would be at work at the Austin and then he would collect mum from grandma's house (she would hop on the back of the motorbike with her winkle pickers and hair that was lacquered solid) and as there was no room for me my uncle would drive me home. I was always insistent that we took the long way home so that we could drive through the ford which was not far from grandma's house but in the opposite direction to my house.

Might bake some cakes this afternoon as I have eggs that need using.
  • It's gotta be apple cake in that baking then Horace, as its that season of the year.

Which reminds me that I have loads of donated cooking apple type apples to preserve and maybe I could use a few in some apple cake myself = nomnom.

    MTSTM.......

Mortgage is still counted on two hands at the moment. But plan is to halve that over the next few months.....then the payments will be so small as they will re calculate it again , that it won't be worth thinking about from then onwards.

Hope the 'feudal system' gets sorted out using modern methods.... :rotfl: I think you should write a book about there...sounds funny.

Well.....up again without enough sleep....may as well go and eat something and see what's on tv for a while.

    Have a good weekend folks.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

Thanks, RPP and others. OBC was a very special little cat, and I will miss him so much...when I get a chance to!:o

YBC seems to be improving physically, but is going about rather subdued and with his tail down...very uncertain, bless him. He cheers up when I cuddle him or LMMM teases him but immediately becomes down again when left alone. Poor little cat...he's only ever known life with OBC. It's going to take time...honestly, non cat owners who think cats are uncaring have no idea...

My carbon monoxide problem appears to have been the alarm becoming faulty. The new alarm is in place and tested, and happy, thank goodness. I couldn't imagine what could be churning out CM, but you never know. I'm glad I can close the windows again! :rotfl:

It's been a busier day than I had planned, but my winter prep and stockup is pretty much complete now. Tins and "stuff" are coming out of my ears, but none will spoil and will be a useful base should I become redundant earlier than currently expected. I will be working through the freezer in the coming weeks so can stock up with the lush treats/meats that come out in December :T.

Tomorrow is designated a lazy day...well, lazier than normal anyway...

    Have a lovely lazy evening

  • Morning All

Gloriously sunny morning here, and I'm feeling more optimistic than I have for quite some time. Probably helped by a lovely sleep, and then, after getting up to feed the pusses, I went back to bed with a cuppa, and slept some more. Bliss!

YBC is on the way back mood-wise, too, thank goodness. Actively seeking kisses and cuddles instead of just accepting them, and also he has had a romp around the house with LMMM. He's now fast asleep in a patch of sunlight :)...LMMM is still romping....

Keeping focused is the way forward for me, so today I'll get my veges prepped for a lovely roast dinner later, give the chooks some treats, sort my food cupboard to suss what needs using over the next month or so, and then, after topping up my oil and windscreen wash, I will be putting my feet up.

Hope you're all enjoying a lovely Sunday morning

    LB xx

    Hi LB

Glad to hear that YBC is getting better and after a good romp is sleeping in the sun.

Got up late (just wish I could get my hands on the twit that was letting fireworks off at 2am - he would have it shoved where the sun don't shine!). I have been lazy, no baking done although I keep picking up my Be-Ro book and putting it down again. I haven't even done any gardening as I really need to sort my tubs out and replant them with bulbs (re-using the ones I took out earlier this year).

I didn't go shopping either - I will walk there tomorrow and kill several birds with one stone as I need to make an appointment with my GP to go over my meds before I can get a repeat prescription, might just ask for some comfort drops too as I have run out.

Will be cooking a roast later - it is the bigger joint which will mean leftovers.:D

    Have a great weekend folks.
  • Moneyistooshorttomention - sorry to hear about your road/feudal problems. Unfortunately if there is a covenant in your deeds requiring you to contribute towards upkeep/maintenance then there is little you can do about it. And, sadly, the person who put the covenant in (or who inherited the right to it) can insist you pay for the work they wish to do. It is the law (albeit a little out of date).

I used to work for a large charity that owns a great deal of land. They had unadopted roads with this type of covenant imposed on both new housing estates and old farms/cottages. The charity would decide when work was needed and what was needed (there was no requirement to consult) and the letters would go out requiring the various householders to cough up. I just hope you are able to persuade liege lord (!) to be reasonable. It is not worth going to the small claims court really as the law allows this type of covenant.

We have covenants here requiring us to pay an abbey tithe if required to do so. Our houses were built in the early 1990s and the abbey was gone long before. My solicitor insisted on insurance to prevent a claim (when I bought my ex out - no mention when we originally bought the house).

  • It is a seriously weird anachronistic thing to think that someone else could just decide to spend another persons money for them (even if they haven't got it). We know our government can do it and just decide to levy a bit more tax or make a cut any time they wish - but another person - huh????

Think they might find they get more than they bargained for in return if they try it mind you;). The law may be (sounds like it is) very outdated and unfair at the moment, but that doesn't mean someone should be allowed to get away with "bad behaviour" by normal modern standards. Am definitely working on basis of "Be fair/be modern or wish you had been....".
