Thank you so much for that advice, it has been such an annoying problem for ages. Am now going into sleep mode myself and will try your ideas tomorrow - will keep you posted!0

Sorry, can't find the hiberfil.sys file - wher is it likely to be??0
-
-
I have done that but still can't find the file - have done a search, nothing comes up0
-
Start - Run - cmd - OK. In the black window that's just opened enter:
cd /d c:\
dir /ah
If it's there:
del hiberfil.sys
If it isn't there it probably means the machine has never hibernated.0 -
That brings up C: dir with 77 items, 69 say 'FOUND' witha number after them but no mention of del hiberfil.sys0
-
del is the delete command. If hiberfil.sys isn't listed it doesn't matter.0

I am not even sure what the difference is between standby, sleep and hibernation.
With Standby the computer goes into a low power state. To resume from standby either press the on/off button or any key on the keyboard (the keyboard also acts as the on switch).
Hibernate is a bit like shutting down the computer, except it saves your working environment to the hard drive. To come out of hibernation you press the on/off button as normal to switch the computer on.0 -
I still don't know which type I have the problem with! Screensaver kicks in as normal, but if I leave it for a while (about 30-45 mins) & forget to turn pc off, by the time I come back the screen is black. When I move the mouse the fan starts up and I think lights come on in the tower, but nothing happens to the screen unless I hold button on cpu down to shut down and then switch on again. Do you think I should leave well alone and just try to remember not to leave pc unattended?? Thanks for your ideas0

check the bios settings, if you leave it as it is, you will end up with a corrupt disk one day, because it hadn't shutdown cleanlyEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
