Hope someone can shed some light on this - after about 30 mins of inactivity, the screen on my pc goes black and the hard drive/fan etc seems to shut down. when I wiggle the mouse, the fan starts spinning and the tower seems to come to life again, but nothing appears on the screen. The only way out is to hold the off button for 5 secs to shut the whole system down and then swithch on again and reboot from scratch. In 'power settings', I have changed everything I can see to 'never', but it still happens. Any ideas much appreciated...

Am sorry but if you know nothing about your pc do not go into these settings. Do you have any mates that can help you. Leave it with me as i will go onto my settings and get back to you. But its at your own risk as I know what I am doing but you might change the wrong one by mistake as can happen very easy

Have you also unticked the box on the "Hibernate" tab?
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

When you boot the PC it should say hit a key to go into the bios, typically esc, F1, F2, F11, F12, Del etc..

Then look for power saving settings, and turn them off, and save settings.

The other thing is could be, is a corrupt hiberfil.sys file, which you can delete as it will be recreated when it goes into hibernation
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Thanks, I will have a try when I have more time (and courage!) tomorrow evening. Actually, I am not even sure what the difference is between standby, sleep and hibernation. It is not that I don't want it to go into any power-saving mode, I'd probably be quite happy with the 'standard' settings, it's just annoying when I can't get out of it again. Thanks for your suggestions.

I have now unchecked that box. That might solve the problem - if it is hibernation as opposed to standby or sleep mode that the pc is going into! Doesn't really explain why it won't come out of it though - am I right in thinking that a wiggle of the mouse should bring everything back to the screen?

Do you mean just delete that file to begin with and see if that solves the problem, or should I delete that first but then also follow the other instructions before going out of BIOS?
To see if it works, would you suggest changing the power settings to something like 5 mins, so that I get a result faster (rather than having to leave it for about half an hour before anything would happen)?

yes, delete it, see if it solves the problem, and if not, check the bios settings.

Power saving is always a bit ropey, if it continues, I'd turn it off, because holding down the power button can corrupt the HD, and stop you booting
