Thanks! I will put together a letter to Orange either tonight or tomorrow. Also, does anyone know how I would go about getting an 'independent report' to prove the fault was not down to my misuse/accidental damage etc?

It will not be easy for iPhone. Apple won't give you a report, so you have to find some other company that will.0

Bear in mind that you'll have to finance this report upfront, and if you lose (or if the result does not support your case), that's money wasted. I'm guessing a minimum of maybe £75? Only you can decide if that risk is worth it for a £50 repair.No free lunch, and no free laptop
