    Hi again.

One of the guys who came for a look round last week came back and signed up for the Job Club :)

I have four participants as my own personal coachees, four ladies - however it looks as though one of them might have found a job by next Thursday!

Got to grips with setting up the dedicated internet and phones and uploaded one of my coachee's CVs.

The formal course starts this week, with one-to-one coaching at the beginning and end of the session.

Our first session of the Job Club has ended, although there will be informal one-to-one coaching going on over the summer if coachees wish. The next
    session starts in September.

Most of the participants lasted the course, we only had a couple of drop-outs. All of them have improved in confidence and have bonded with each other, the man mentioned above who 'only came to look round' has forged a strong friendship both with his Coach and one of the other participants. As he is Indian, his coach is White British and his new friend is Afro-Caribbean, this is multiculturalism at its best and how it is supposed to be :)

Several of the ladies have also formed friendships.

We have a new trained coach, a young lady of Indian descent. Good as we needed another female coach and it is good to have a person from an ethnic minority as a coach. She is also very friendly, approachable and brilliant at reaching out to the participants.

As for jobs - no paid ones yet, but three have found good volunteering positions in the areas in which they would like to work, one man is liasing with the Prince's Trust about going self-employed, two have had interviews and two have job applications in that they are waiting to hear about. One lady has filled in an online questionnaire herself having never even switched a computer on before.

All of the coaches have found it to be very fulfilling and rewarding, albeit hard work!

So that's just a little resume of our CAP JOb Club. Hope eyou found it informative and interesting.

    Congratulations to you.
I have read about CAP and think they do a great job (sad that there is a need, but there you go.) It sounds as if you have found a worthwhile and fulfilling job, hope you continue to succeed in it and help other people to boost their skills ands self confidence too.

We started off on an informal basis when we lived in Spain, looking after our friend's dog when she had to go out for the day.

When we came back to the UK, our friends asked us to look after their dogs (one of them the same one as in Spain - they adopted him, long story!). They usually went with an agency but decided to ask us if we wanted to do it instead.

We still look after their dogs on a 'mate's rates' basis, but decided to join the agency they used to use. This way we are fully referenced and insured, the agency find us the work and if anything goes wrong it is their problem, not ours (not that anything has so far!).

We've been doing it for just over two years now. It's a good way to supplement our Pensions and pay for those little luxuries.

  • Just an update to the Job Club story:

Three of our participants now have paid work! Two full-time, one part-time (but good money).

One of the full-time ones came from a church member who runs a small business locally and he has taken on a long-term unemployed Job Club member.

One of my own coachees looks well on the way to getting another cleaning job to supplement the one she already has :)

Really pleased and makes it all worthwhile.

Two of my coachees now have acceptable employment and one is on the way to getting the experience she needs to do supply Teaching Assistant work :). One has decided she is not fit enough physically to offer her services on the open employment market (I agree with her conclusion) and has withdrawn.

I have a new set of three coachees now, plus I am still supporting one of my previous ones.

Altogether I would say about 30% of our participants have found work and/or training with help from the Job Club. All have grown in confidence and several have made new friends.

I'm pleased to be a part of it.

Of my three new coachees, one has not returned since the first week. I'm pretty sure I know why.

I also had another coachee who has gone to Ghana for an indefinite period :)

Of my remaining two, one is just awaiting the results of a CRB check to come through so that she can start volunteering in a school. Once the period of volunteering (about a month) is over, she will either have a job at the school, or work from the Supply Pool. :)

But the best and most unexpected one happened today. I was having a coaching session with my only male coachee. He has been unemployed for five years and is in his fifties, and we were discussing his transferable skills and where he had worked, when a word popped into my head . The word was the name of a small outlet in my city where they recondition white goods and resell them. (We actually bought a washing machine and tumble dryer off them recently). My coachee had worked in a warehouse, had had a job delivering white goods, and had some retail experience. Seemed just right for him.

Anyway I acted on a hunch, rang the place up to see if they had any vacancies, explaining who I was and telling them about my coachee's experience.

Would you believe, they DO have a vacancy and my coachee has an appointment tomorrow :). He is pleased but very nervous, so I have had to give him a quick 'coach' in interview skills. He has not really had an interview before, he worked at one place for decades and the other jobs he has had have been by word of mouth.

As ours is a CAP Job Club and all the Coaches are Christians, we also prayed for him after everyone had gone home.

I'll let you know how he gets on. I'm excited. It's just what the JOb Club is about :)
