Absolutely, but lots of people on this thread have actually explained that going to lots of different supermarkets would cost them more money than it would save. Therefore their choice not to do so is not lazy, but sensible! Furthermore, there are myriad ways in which people can save money. Very few people do every single one. I bet you don't. Does that make you lazy?

    Absolutely.

For example, op feels he/she is getting use out of their oyster, and DH feels not using oyster more than having to and therefore avoiding a season one is better value for him. He walks everywhere before ten pm......but tbf his office do pay for a cab if he is at work after nine or ten in the evening ;). On days or weeks he is working less heavily or meeting friends and uses the oyster he tends to try to really use the oyster , getting max value out of the week or the day :rotfl:

Similarly I have never had a gym membership while in London, but did used to run before I was unwell and walk all the time. I'd rather have used my spare time walking or and exploring and staying fit back then then saving another way and spending that money on a gym.

People's lifestyles and wants are different. :). I really miss the 'grubby little' shops of London where I found amazing foods and things to do with them, bought trays of incredible fruit that we'd end up eating only that fruit for almost a week:o. Its still useful to supermarket hoar, :o but I'd be using my spare time making the most of the things I miss having easy access to in London that I cannot get so easily I now.

We save far more as a household minimising travel costs (which are our second biggest expenditure after housing) than we do trying to minimise groceries a wee bit tbh.

I didn't aim it at anyone in particular and note one's use of the word 'some'.

Nevertheless this a money saving website where one would expect to find people prepared to go out of their way to save my money (literally or metaphorically).

and why would anyone go out of their way to different shops if it is going to cost extra to do so? My time is precious and I shop locally.

I use five different supermarkets; the choice of which one to visit depends upon what is on my shopping list at the time. I go to @sda, Tesc0, M0rries, Ald! and W@itrose; but only one per trip, as I'm not well enough to do two in one hit.:( I don't buy meat or fish (vegetarian), but I buy ALL my fruit'n'veg at the market stall in the town centre; it's better value and imho better produce. I also get my cheese and eggs at the local farmers market - again, it's good value, and much better stuff.

I literally cannot get all my shop in one place; we're a tad picky, and although I'm not fussy about brands, I am fussy about the form an item takes - for instance, we only buy loose leaf tea, and we get coffee beans to grind ourselves.

Luckily for me, I have a lovely DH who is happy to visit M0rries in his lunch break if I need stuff from there, and prepares veggies for me the night before and leaves them ready for me to do the meal; otherwise, like Peony, I'd have to resort to pre-prepared veggies. Which reminds me.... I need to sweet-talk him into taking me to Ald! tonight when he gets in from work.......:o

as everyone has said most do price matching anyway . Maybe I just put too high a price on my time ?

Please don't take this as an insult, but clearly the so called price matching does NOT mean you can go in any big store and do a full shop and be guaranteed to get the best price, its simply a marketing ploy. The so called price matching schemes have so many loopholes and clauses that they are almost pointless. TBH the big 3 or 4 supermarkets have always competed with each other on prices because they have to.

Many, many articles and price comparisons have been done that prove buying the same basket of items in the stores rarely comes out with the same prices. But say on a £20 ish basket you may only be looking at a difference of say £8-£9 between the most expensive and the cheapest, so if you have got the money I can see most people wouldn't bother about the odd few pounds each week.

However many of us are either on a really tight budget or on principle object to paying over the odds just to enrich a greedy supermarkets coffers. So we shop around. Having shopped all over I have settled on what saves us the most money.

I use a local farm/meat shop for high quality, high welfare local meat. All the prices are far better than the supermarket higher ranges and much, much better quality and taste. I would rather have less good quality meat than a pile of cheaper stuff. I shop probably once a month and fill the freezer as you get bulk discounts.
We have another local farm shop for veggies/cheese etc again much is locally produced and the price is far better than the big stores. But I don't go everyweek as we often get aldi/lidl veggies on offer and grow our own when the weather is warmer.

Weekly I do a round trip. I drive to Lidl-often at weekend if they have a good half price W/E offer on. Lidl is on the same block of shops as poundstrecher and b&m bargains so i whip around all 3 together. Then (not always on the same day) I go in Aldi for the other stuff i didn't get elsewhere.

I checkout threads on here and other sites for really good offers and still on occasion bob in to any of the other stores for good bargains/look out for reductions-OH is often out working as he is self employed so can bob in on his way from jobs so no extra cost in petrol. I occasionally do an approved foods order as well and sometimes nip in Asda to stock up on some smart price stuff/offers.

As our income can vary it makes sense to stock up on things when we have the cash and a good offer is available and to shop around for the best price.

However I can see if a couple both worked full time and were on reasonable wages they might well decide to just shop at one store as to them their "spare" time is limited. If we had to shop in one store I would choose Aldi or Asda. Aldi would be the best value as their items are as good as the best ranges but prices are closer to the value ranges. However some stuff you can't get in Aldi and I know not all towns have one, so out of the big store Asda is easily the cheapest.

Mind you if I had plenty of cash I would go for Waitrose or M & S lol.

You pay your money and take your choice.

Regarding calling people lazy I think the lazy ones are those who shop in one store because they always have done, and just whizz around throwing stuff in the trolly with no list and little thought they moan how the prices are going up every week and never try anything else.

If you CHOOSE to shop in one store/online/in a selection of stores because its best for you either financially or physically thats not lazy or wasting time/money its just sensible and the best choice for you.

I shop in various shops as I enjoy the game of working out the best value for money.I could, if I wanted to, stay at home and have everything delivered from one shop, but I like seeing a bit of variety. As I go to my History club on a Friday, if I need it I will shop in Aldi's which is ajacent. But also if I fancy a mooch around MrT then I'll do it on a Tuesday when I am next door at my U3A coffee morning.I go to Morrisons once a month ,mainly to top up with diesel as I get cheaper fuel there, and I save the fuel points up until I have a fivers worth and spend that instore when I'm there.Icelands is a two minute walk away, along with the local G/grocer , wet fish shop and Wilkinsons .So I won't specifically make a journey just for one particular shop, unless I have a reason to be near to it.At the moment I am not doing a lot of shopping as I have so much stuff in stock and fridge/freezer I am saving my cash and hanging on to my pennies. as I say I have plenty of time to browse so its a lot easier for me I suppose

In a fortnight I will likely have had two small deliveries from Abel & Cole and maybe also two small deliveries from Riverford. I would use Ocado weekly but my mother is a shopaholic so usually I will find myself in Sainsbury's in her county or mine weekly. I get a delivery from Iceland maybe once a month. About every two months I get an order from Holland & Barrett.

Tesco in her county (but not for food) around 4-6 weeks. OH and I will go to ASDA or Sainsbury's once a week to look at DVDs and pick up a few organic veg while there. Sometimes he will go to Lidl to pick up organic yogurt on offer or I will go with my mother to look at offers for her. We also visit Home Bargains and Morrisons occasionally. I pop into her local Budgens every time I see her cos it sells our fave peanut butter.

My town has Sainsbury's (2), ASDA, Co-op (2), Spar, One Stop, 99p Stores, Poundland, Wilkinson, Costcutter (2), Home Bargains, Lidl, Morrisons, Tesco Extra, Tesco Express (3), Holland & Barrett, Iceland. No farmers' market, one butcher, one greengrocer, no actual bakery, no fishmonger, no Marks & Spencer.

It's a compact town so we can walk from house to most supermarkets in 10 mins. I'll always look for bargains on organic and wild food and there isn't much here hence using deliveries.

My mother loves to shop so we hit several when she's here. I used to overshop but am more disciplined now.
  • Unfortunately, I need to attend hospitals regularly. As my journey could be 64 miles round trip I ensure I visit Asda,Tesco,Morrison's ,Sainsbury's, Aldi and Lidl on the way home. I sometimes visit Farm Foods, 99p Stores or Poundland, depending on freezer space, time and parking places. It makes a long day but I take advantage of my neccessaary journeys.
You have to spend money in order to save on the bargains.

Sorry to veer off topic JackieO but trying to work out which town the history club is in - as I know you're fairly local to me and I have a bit of a thing for history.
