Its some phones. I have a sony wife has a samsung. If i add a smiley to mine its just like the old type simple text sideways face. On my wifes samsung it turns into a proper emoticon. Result is she gets charged mms, i dont. Also if i send a text of over 160 it tells me it will be sent as 2 messages. Result for me is i see 2 messages on my bill (inclusive so no charge). On my wifes samsung it goes as an mms so she gets charged.

I think all O2 are doing is clarifying a problem 'some' users are getting.

No mention of being charged for receiving texts.

meaning if the wife adds a smiley to a text it gets turned into an emoticon therefore MMS

    Hi,
Thought I'd stick my nose into this too, my mate just bought an S4 and his first text to me to tell me his new number came through as MMS so I warned him to check his settings.
Anyway after digging in his phone today it appears that the button at the bottom left of the keyboard with the emoticons adds a graphic element to the text therefore it automatically converts the simple text file which would be free on most contracts to MMS which you'll almost definitely be charged for.
If however you press the menu button whilst writing a text and add smiley there it will add a standard text version eg. :) which will leave the text as a standard SMS.

If you scroll through your text history you should see that texts that have a Samsung emoticon in it are all MMS messages, ones without or include a standard text smiley eg. ; ) are simple SMS.

I assume that this is a Samsung os problem as I have a sony z and its not there on mine. The only advice I've given my friend is tick the warn before converting to MMS box in message settings and don't use the emoticon button in bottom left.
Going to call his provider tomorrow and see if we can get a refund but not holding my breath.
    Hope that helps

It is also down to the app as well. I've just found that the new version of Handcent by default makes any sms that would be over 3x160 characters into a mms. But you can go into setting and switch it off so texts of any size will be sent as sms's...
  • Hello I've just been told by O2 that they are charging me nearly £90 for sending picture message when I thought that I was sending text messages (using a free unlimited text plan that I have had for a while) I had forwarded my contacts individually from my old O2 blackberry to my new EE mobile service provider's Samsung phone. Nothing popped up and said "this is a not a text message" and I was using the text icon on the blackberry. And the messages arrived on the new phone looking like a text. Does anyone know if there is anything i can do to stop O2 from doing this? Any info would be most welcome.

Cont. from above post ... Have just called O2 customer services on 0800 0321402 (the webchat person suggested I call their premium rate 0844 number from my mobile to discuss this disputed bill *shakes head in disbelief at the cheek of it* ) The intelligent and articulate person I spoke with said she can see easily from my bill that all the transactions were done as a group and were related to forwarding contacts to my new phone. She is going to submit a request to her back office to have the charges rescinded. High five to her irrespective of the outcome, and I will make sure that I let O2 know how good she was to deal with.

I hope this info will be of use to others who are in the same boat, getting stuffed by O2 I will now make sure that I share my very bad experience of O2's charging practices at every opportunity because customers voting with their feet is the only way to make them improve

I don't think you've understood the situation. It was not something that O2 did, it was your phone sending them as MMS. O2 have been very good in trying to raise a good will feature for you.

It's not a problem with O2's charging practice but with you not appreciating how your phone works. See the previous posts in the thread for more details.
