Hi sacsquacco
I've been speaking with our Revenue Protection managers about your concerns. They've given me a bit more information that might be of interest.
Energy theft is an important issue for us and all the other suppliers. Clearly it's a crime, but people who commit this type of crime do so for all sorts of different reasons. Consequently, each case is treated on its merits.
As I said above, our Revenue Protection section is far bigger than just single figures. Additionally, we've dedicated investigation teams in the field across the UK, G4S included, who investigate E.ON's reports of suspected meter tampering.
Might be an idea to talk to your own company as to the good work they do on our behalf.
However, as above, we're not complacent and our Revenue Protection guys will be following up on the level of training our meter readers receive to make sure it's up to date. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
As for it being a civil matter, all energy companies have a statutory right to recover losses and costs incurred because of energy theft. In some cases, we'll report the matter to the police where the evidence is strong enough to bring it before the Crown Prosecution Service. As do the other suppliers.
To say one supplier is more active than another isn't, I'm afraid, too accurate. All suppliers report their investigation figures to Ofgem and it's clear the industry takes this matter very seriously.
What's an ever increasing concern for us and the other suppliers are the risks involved with this type of crime. As you've said, it's extremely dangerous to tamper with gas and electricity meters. It puts the people in the property at risk of injury or even fatality. It can also affect neighbouring properties.
This is one of the main messages we try to put across. It's not worth putting lives at risk by tampering with meters.
Anyone concerned about suspected meter tampering should contact us. As I hope the above shows, such reports will be taken very seriously and acted upon.
Hope this is of interest sacsquacco.

I am an official company representative of E.ON. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. You can see my name on the companies with permission to post list. I am not allowed to tout for business at all. If you believe I am please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com This does NOT imply any form of approval of my company or its products by MSE"0 -
Thanks Malc. like a couple of other suppliers they have " dumped " their electric RPU side to our. I am afraid, not that good, G4S employees to go and sort a" reported " electric bypass. They only go to an address if asked to . They have no powers to access EONs customer usage to gather information. Thats what BG RPU do, and thats where they get all the info needed for a house visit. The gas side is done by your in house people as far as I m aware.
I am saying that EONs meter readers are nowhere near up to scratch in their knowledge of a bypass anyway, and even if they were , getting through to the relevant people in my experience is poor. As I said, the ex policeman I spoke to was nt impressed at all that he d not received a jot of basic training in the year he d been with them. It really is very poor for your company and others to just about pay little attention to meter bypassing. You are not the only one, I met a Npower employee in the centre of the roughest part of S!!!!horpe who had never found a bypass in his many years service ( I had found 3 that week ) who was upset when I showed him the techniques via my photos of how easy it is to bypass prepay electric meters and gas meters. The same went for the ex policeman. Your meter readers need plenty of training visits from RPU to show photos and meters in a dedicated meeting. They dont get that, and thats not acceptable0 -
Hi sacsquacco and chanz4
Not sure where your information is coming from but, I have to say, it's a bit wide of the mark.
We take all forms of meter tampering and fraud extremely seriously. All reports of potential criminal activity against the company are thoroughly investigated and the appropriate action taken for each individual case.
Far from doing 'virtually nothing' our Revenue Protection department are very active in detecting energy theft and recovering lost revenue. p.s Im an rpu officer
We've a robust set up in place involving far more than two members of staff. There are several teams involving a number of specially trained investigators.
These teams are headed and manned by professional crime investigators. We also work closely with outside bodies, including the Police, to detect and prevent energy theft.
We're not complacent, though, and are continually looking for incidences of energy theft. I agree, meter readers are a great source of information. Consequently, if you've hard evidence of meter tampering or energy theft involving E.ON, please tell us. All our advisors have the ability to alert the Revenue Protection teams of such cases.
Alternatively, if you drop an email to the address in my Profile with the details, I'll make sure the information goes to the right people.

Hi chanz4
The Revenue Protection guys I've been talking about are our dedicated meter security teams. These guys are directly employed by E.ON and not the DNO.
As you say, we also involve outside organisations, like G4S, who carry out work on our behalf.
